Moveable Plywood Dolly

#1 Post by bgavin »

Does anybody have a trick design for a plywood dolly?

I want to put my 5x5 BB sheets on edge, and on something that has wheels so I can move it about the shop.
It should be sturdy enough to hold at least a dozen sheets, and perhaps keep them flat.
I am set up for welding, if need be.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

That's a start.
I'm trying to figure something with an adjustable stop that will let me keep a varied number of sheets compressed, on edge.

My 20' sea cargo box arrived yesterday and now occupies a place of relative permanence in my RV storage behind the fence.
This will be the new home for all the Garage Junk that landed in 1993 when we bought the house.
The table saw and wood shop are going into the garage.. at long last.

I keep 10~20 sheets of BB in stock, and want to move it about as required.
The ideal storage would be flat, but I don't have room for that.
In my garage, on-edge storage for several years did not induce warping.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Besides, I DO NOT like those Lowe's carts.

I have given up on the dolly idea for my baltic birch stock.
While cleaning out the garage today in preparation for the shop installation, I managed to get underneath a falling pile of on-edge BB.

The strapping young assistant and myself didn't have enough poop to push the pile back upright.
I had to get my wife involved for additional push power.

Frustration, embarrassment, and multiple lacerations has convinced me I have to sacrifice 5x5 feet of floor space for BB storage, on the flat.
I still have three sheets of 3/4" BB that are useless for our cabs, so one of those sheets will become the storage surface.
I figure I can make a flat storage unit for the BB that can also double for other storage, so I don't waste that much vertical space.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

If one made several stringers out of 1/2 " plywood, say, 6 inches wide by 24 inches long,.... drilled holes and installed dowel stoppers to keep the wood from skidding....would this work? The stringers would, themselves, have to kept from skidding. The dowels would only need to be maybe three inches long. Multiple holes would accommodate different 'piles'/'stacks, numbers, or types of plywood.

5x5 barely fits above the wheel wells of a full size pickup, which I don't have.

My lumber yard is an open-the-gate, hitch-the-trailer, drive-10-miles, load-the-wood, drive-10-miles, unload-the-wood, back-in-trailer, unhitch-the-trailer, chock-the-wheels type of adventure. I keep stock for this reason. Otherwise a wood procurement trip pisses away several hours of precious spare time.

I figure the best use of my limited work space is making a sturdy 5x5 work table that doubles as flat storage underneath.
I was originally going to put overhead storage above the 5x5 flats, but figure that would be too deep to reach.
I need a work surface anyway, so it might as well do double duty as stock storage.
I can put it on sturdy wheels, and either lock or chock the wheels as needed.

I haven't seen my garage this empty since 1993... amazing.

Those would have been just as crushing as 20-odd piece of BB..
