Breaking in my 4012HO drivers

#1 Post by rec »

I am breaking in my 4012HO drivers as we speak
I burned a 30hrtz cd and am playing it continously thru a cd player, mixer, and amp.
The driver sort of buzzes and jumps up and down a little
Is this the correct behavior?

It should be barely audible, and you should see the cone moving. Use very little power, 10 Volts measured across the amp outputs or driver input tabs. You might hear a slight hum, but a buzz could indicate a problem.

We are talking AC volts.....correct?
I tested my amp output and when it hits 10v the woofer is moving substantially, hence the buzz
I am doing this with a cd deck and a DJ mixer (30hrtz test tone burned as a mp3)
I definitely have the polarity correct as I double checked
Help!!

Yes. AC volts.

The buzz might be a result of over-driving during recording. I had this on my first try. :( The second recording was done at a lower level which resulted in a 'clean' recording, especially at the 10 volt level. :)

passing 30hz into an MP3 can be problematic, as the MP3 compression is designed to filter out frequencies that are unnoticeable by most human ears. See if you can feed a clean (read - not compressed) signal to the drivers.

Interesting - I must look at re-burning my ones then

Honestly, for a straight sine wave it shouldn't affect things all that much unless you're using a really low bitrate, but I was just tossing it out there as a possible source of the distortion. The MP3 compression technique actually removes more data from full-range music content than it does with a single tone. If you're not noticing problems I wouldn't worry about it.

Download the free version of TrueRTA and use the built in sine wave generator.
