Jack 2x110 Airhead Bass Rig

#1 Post by DaveK »

I've been using an Omni 10 airhead for my bass rig and am quite happy with the sound. However, it's made from baltic birch so it weighs a lot and it's more than I need for small setups. I was already set up for some other builds so I decided to upgrade the bass rig at the same time. Here it is. (I don't have any sound comparisons with the Omni because I re-used the drivers for the Jack so I can't run them side-by-side.)

Pros:
  • Sounds good to me
  • I used Arauco this time so it is lighter
  • Modular so I can take just one speaker
Cons:
  • Taller (the Jack is taller than an Omni 10.5, plus there is space between the top and bottom cabs, plus I added another rack space to the airhead)
  • A little top-heavy with the GK700 amp up that high

That looks smart.

I'm a bit confused by the latch, it looks like it is permanently fixed to both cabs.

Chris - It looks like with the wheels on the bottom cab he made it so he could latch them together and wheel them as one cab, very nice idea. Good looking build too.

I hope it's permanently affixed :-). The idea is that the top is a 1x10 combo and the bottom is an extension cab. When I take both they latch together for easy wheeling. When I take just the top it detaches and gets hand carried (or lugged given the weight of the GK700 head).

Ha ha  I'm not too thick that I don't understand the purpose of the latches and their application.

I was looking at the assembly and it appears that the base plate between the latch is fixed (unless it is split down the middle and you can't tell in the picture) otherwise you would have half a latch protruding from the extension cab when not in use. That was my query.

I think I get your question now. The latch is a standard 2-piece butterfly. I mounted it so the split between the two pieces is about 1/2" above the top of the bottom cab. That means it sticks up about 1/2" when the top is elsewhere. The 1/2" offset is because there is a 1/4" gap between the two cabs to make room for the rubber feet on the bottom of the top cab and I added another 1/4" so the top half of the latch would not catch on anything when disconnected.
