12x8 BFM system

#1 Post by Paul Norman »

Here are some pics of last Sat. nite. Had 3 bands in six hours with out a hitch. All bands were very happy with the sound. The client was very pleased saying " It's loud and sounds clear but we can still talk." Just what you wanna hear. :D I was running about a 100db at FOH 100ft. from stage. I've done 14 of these outdoor shows this summer with 3 to go and this system works great. Everyone comments on the clarity and when they find out I built it they are really suprised. The last 4 shows I've been running the top 2 box on each side with a aux feed mix for vocals only with a seperate EQ. It really helps bring out the vocals in the mix. The first pic is 8 across the front of stage from a different show which I've done with six also. I can't tell the differance between 6 and 8. I think the spread is to far for 8. Cancellation? :conf:

With the subs all mouth to mouth they essentially operate as one, so cancellation isn't a problem, though dispersion may, or may not, be. That wide a source will give narrowed dispersion above the 1 wavelength dimension, but in outdoor venues especially that may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Tell us about the boxes and what is in them.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

A lot like the dual PA system. I have always liked this approach better than trying to patch two mixers, etc.

It's a little older, but I'm guessing things haven't changed too much besides the addition of more boxes.

The subs are 27" with 3015LF's. The mains are OT112's with 2512's, 10 with 6 piezo's, 2 with 12 melded with pole pockets. The grills are stretched metal with 1/4" A/C foam. Everything is right from the plans-That's way they work so good! 8)

Paul, your located in Iowa? I'm in the Cedar Rapids area, I would like to catch your system in action someday. Any future plans coming up near the eastern side?

Hmm, would love to have a rig like that to blast out some nasty electronic music. One day... one day...
Just to make me jealous, what's it like when run hard?

No, it belongs to the city. I've done about 10 shows on it. This is the stage I'm considering to

buy.

They have locking corners and are just stacked. Sometimes I will stap them all together.

Paul, do you see any stability advantages to using three OT212 instead of six OT112?

Second question: do you have any idea how much SPL and distance at war volume?

Your system is the very upper limit of my trailer limits.
Four T48 and six OT212.
Doubling those numbers to 8x12 is only a 3dB gain overall, so pointless for my situation.

Last question: clarity at war volume.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.
