Northern Sound and Light

#1 Post by Tim A »

Time you give you guys a heads-up. Before you buy anything for pro sound or lighting, check these guys out.

You must join to see the real prices. You can join by charging $1 on your credit card, or buying something. Or if you're the patient type you can email for the price. I'm into instant gratification so I went with the $1.

"Prices too low to advertise"

How many times have you seen that? In this case, it's true. You must agree not to post prices on the internet. I was leery, but figured it was worth the buck to find out. I'm glad I did.

Their shipping and handling is high, but it still works out. The more you buy, the better the shipping rates average out. As an example, I chose four items that you'd get from a big box store with 'free shipping' and compared final prices. The savings at NSAL were about $175 (including their shipping costs) on about $750 worth of stuff. That's substantial by anyone's definition.

Go check them out. Don't pay any attention to the posted prices. Spend your $1 and see for yourself.

I first purchased a complete Lepricon lighting system from Northern, for a client a while ago and was 100% satisfied with the price and prompt delivery. ( They are only 1 state away - Got a free T-shirt too )

Haven't dealt with them, but have heard a lot of good things about Northern. I did call them to price the 01V96, they were considerably cheaper than the online stores....$1899 or something similar IIRC.

+1 on Northern Sound. A friend tipped me to them and I've been very happy with them.

+1 from me too. I've been buying from them for quite a while. Their prices on yamaha boards is pretty top notch...the 01v96 pricing is very competitive.

They used to sell QSC, but i think they got dropped or something like that. So I've had to take my amp business elsewhere. (I buy wholesale now from a local warehouse)

Yea, been buying from them for a couple years, anytime I need something of cost. The other thing they do which is cool, every so often they'll send you an email with a "free shipping" coupon if you buy over $199 or something like that. Usually has a 30 day time frame, but a nice perk.

My last purchase from them were 2 dbx 223 x overs.... saved about $35 per unit over local purchasing, or even eBay!

I never paid $1 to join or anything, just signed up... and never saw any sort of agreement to not post pricing... I think THEY agreed with the manufacturers NOT to post pricing... but anyway, I edited this...

This week or next I need to pick up a lavalier mic and a bodypak for the AT 200 series... and I know where I am going !

Tim's first post in this thread said, "You must agree not to post prices on the internet."

If you did agree to their conditions, you might want to edit your post above.

+1

Just purchased a crown power amp from them. The phone ordering took a while, and it also seems to be a pain in the ass if you want your order shipped to a different address. But overall, the best price I've ever found for this amp. Even with shipping, it's much less than every other store online, even less than what others sell B-stock items at (shipping would be additional as well). A b-stock item with free shipping would still be more expensive.

just call them, and get it shipped to your billing address, no problem.

Thanks for the tip, saved me a good amount of money.

Not exactly the best place to buy lighting i'm afraid.

Bought 9 LED lights and 5 were completely defective. Returned 4 for refund and got a replacement for the other. The 4 I returned were USED! Scratched up, dented and to top it off, didn't even work. I have since heard from someone in the lighting business that NSL has a somewhat of a bad reputation with lighting and that my expereince is typical.

I will say that NSL were really cool about this and sent me UPS labels to ship them back for free and didn't give me one problem whatsoever. I also bought a Audix kick drum mic that was new with no problems.
Currently running:

"used"

en route from the warehouse to NSL, the original box was destroyed. Other than that it's new. Cant be beat.

I joined NSL recently, and the QSC line is no longer carried. IIRC, there was some significant beef over the steep discount pricing.

I will be buying my Sennheiser wireless rig from NSL.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Just fyi, if you take their price quote printout, to any Guitar Center, they are obliged to match the price, if you don't want to (wait) waste money on shipping. I did it on multiple occasions, and they hate me here at the local GC.

Technically - that's against the terms of the legalese you have to agree to every time you sign on. If you can get away with it - fine, but don't leave them a copy of the printout - if they decide to forward that printout along to the manufacturers they could get NSL in a LOT of trouble.

Been buying from them for a while on big ticket items... always been satisfied. The only thing you need to be cautious of is whether the item is "special" order or not. If special order it clearly states that the item is not returnable. I do miss my old sales rep though, he was great! That monthly email is pretty cool also. Usually at $25-$35 bucks, it is essentially free shipping., and yes, on some products I go there to always compare pricing and I have yet to see something lower.
