Finnish/Baltic Birch

#1 Post by jonnyh1988 »

Hey everyone

Just got a quote for 3 sheets of 9 ply or 11 ply BB 1220mm(48in) x 2440 (96in).

9 ply 3 sheets - $285 AUD or about $229 USD

11 ply 3 sheets - $339 AUD or about $272 USD

The face veneer is of the BB grade. Can someone please have a look at:

Tell me if you think I could get away with some of the WG grade. This is the first time I have ever bought wood

I am concerned about the cost and whether I should keep looking and find a better price. Is this close to prices in the US or is Australia just always this expensive.

Links to supplier who has two locations one in NSW, one in QLD:

Thanks for reading

$76USD per sheet of 4x8 is pricey, indeed. Probably not out of range, due to your location.

It used to be available here for $48~53 USD per sheet, but is no longer available.
I pay $31 USD per sheet of 1/2" x 60 x 60.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Use Australian Hoop Pine - it has almost the same strength as BB and will cost you 1/3 the price

Oh really?

If money is no object, how preferable is BB to Hoop Pine?

Are there any redeeming properties of birch ply besides strength?

Do the plans talk about all this stuff...because I'm getting them tomorrow:P

Thanks

How stupid of me...didn't notice the "authorised BFM cab builder" note under your name. Guess I'll be buying Hoop Pine :)

Thanks mate
