Dampening Material???

I haven't built any of the BFM designs yet but I have my mind set on building a OT12/T39. I have been out looking at prices, on the extra things I wont get in a kit, to see how much I need to have money wise to build my rig. I saw that one of the things I wont have is dampening material. Someone told me I wont need dampening material on the T39 so I just need it on the OT12.

Is this true?

I have also read that mattress topper or whatever at Walmart works great but there isn't a Walmart in Australia. Anyways I remember adding dampening material to car subwoofer boxes when I built a few of them and we would always use polyester "snow." Its what I used to use for having a snow scenary with my old trainset. The stuff wasn't really thick but they are different thickness grades. So I went to a "Michaels," type store here called Lincraft and found they had some "snow." It is about the same thickness as what I am used to but I dont know if this is what I need or if this will work. Here is the link:

There is another product they have there also that is a little thicker and I felt might work out better and it is called Softfill Premium. Here is the link:

The soft fill premium is used for the inside of quilts. The material is somewhat flat and would probably glue to a flat surface with some spray on adhesive pretty well. Atleast I think it would.

Anyways for all those people out there who have built these cabs do you think my suggestion would work? The other good thing about these product is that it is very cheep compared to other things here in Australia

...but you have Target and the like. Try them for the mattress topper. There are two types of mattress topper - expensive and cheap and apart from the money, there's very little difference so go for the cheaper. A single queen size topperpad should cost you around $A35.00

See if there's a factory making pillow and sleeping bag stuffing in Adelaide. There's one near me in Auckland. You may have to search for "non-woven fabrics" in your yellow pages. Those machines are notoriously unreliable and they always have rolls of rejects that they like to ditch because they take up so much space. I can get a roll the size of the inside of a Toyota Hi_ace for about $NZ30.00.

Upholsterers are your next bet for the stuffing and again, they'll have offcuts - or may be able to tell you where the non-woven factory is.

I believe that material is higher quality (Medical grade) than what is typically used, but would work just fine.

It's the right type of stuff but may be the dearer grade. I can get a Queen Single size here for about $NZ42.00 which is $AU 33.00. and that's at a specialty rubber shop. KMart could be even cheaper.

However if that's for a std double bed, that's not too bad.

I will try Clark rubber and see if I can find this product for cheeper. Hopefully I will and then I can convince the wife that it will only cost x amount of money to build my OT12/T39.

Little does she know after seeing a few youtube clips and reviewing others post I think I will want to build the wedge,AT,T18,T30,Omni12/15,Jack10 and of coarse another OT12/T39.

I am still looking for a cheep alternative. Clark Rubber has some convoluted foam for a single mattress which cost $50. Kmart had some also for about $55. I will keep looking and worst case scenario I use the polyfill which cost $12 and is used for the inside of quilts. The stuff comes in a long roll and it can be cut to whatever size. But I will keep trying to find the fabric stores and see if I can find some reject material.

I wouldn't if I were you.

You're going to spend all that time and money building a cab that will blow the socks of anything commercial you put up against it for about 1/4 - 1/3 the cost and you want to skimp a few bucks on some topper pad????

When the plans say topper pad....use that and nothing else......that's if you want a good result.

Excuse my ignorance - There is no mention of using dampener (topper etc) in the t48 plans except for the urethane foam under the driver.

Will I gain anything (negligible perhaps?) besides weight if I install some topper or something similar?

Damper material is not used in horn subs.
