Boy, did I screw up my first attemp at spraying on Duratex. I bought the spray version, got the proper hopper gun and...
I turned down the pressure at the gun to about 25 but I used too big of nozzel and it really laid it on. The surface ended up with a very heavy moon like surface. Might have been OK for a truck bed but I didn't like it.
So, after curing I spent about 4 hours sanding down the speakers I went back over it with just a regular roller and it came out great. In fact, despite the waste of some Durtex, the first coat made an awesome primer/filler and filled in all the grain and minor wood imperfections.
Next time I will use the smallest nozzel. Also, I might even try rolling on the first coat and then sanding it down to act as a primer/filler. And with much smaller pock marks it will go much easier and waste less.
Here's a pics of the result. You can see the heavier pock marks that got the majority of their heights knocked down by sanding so it made for an interesting effect.

You could have just rolled the first coat while it was wet, but you need to have the roller on hand since it can turn into sand paper once it dries a little. Roll it, skip the sanding, spray your texture coat. There's no need to waste the paper and effort in between.

I would think that appropriate protocol for satan latex black paint would involve fresh goat's blood, a pentagram, and incantations to the dark lord--not sandpaper, but hey, that's just me. I knew these were some wicked speaker designs, but you're taking this to a whole new level! (on a side note, would blood gunk up the spray hopper?)puc wrote:off topic but related....i just finished painting my t39s w some satan latex black paint. do i sand it down first or can i just put duratex after it dries? rolled on or sprayed on (i do have a hopper gun)?
