The Sensational Alex Harvey Band video (playing through BFD)

#1 Post by Dave Non-Zero »

Here is a couple of videos of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band playing though 4x t48 and 4x DR280 run off a Yamaha p5000s (tops) and a Yamaha p7000s (subs) processing done by Driverack PA, crowd of about 300. The only problem on the night was the lead vocals clipping the desk and so occasionally causing distortion in the piezos. It was a borrowed desk (because the band needed more than my 16 ch) and i was a bit annoyed because it was the only bit of kit that wasnt mine and i wanted to impress the tour engineer. He liked the system fine tho. I did the sound for the support band and i had the vocals much higher with no problems, so i know the system had more to give. Ill try and find some pictures of how the system was actually set up in the room. (subs were 4 across the front of the stage with the monitors on top.)

Was the audio pulled from an external mike?
Nice effort, but were is the bass? It's bandwidth limited.

Its just the camcorder mic im assuming. I dont know who videoed it, just someone told me there were a couple of videos from the night. Im very surprised the mic wasnt distorting that close to the subs. Believe me there was bass on the night. the previous night i had to give my name and address to the police because of it.

That's what I figured, those camcorder mics have NO fidelity; Using an external mike is mandatory, I don't suppose anyone got a recording pulled off the board? It ( external audio ) can be mixed back with a NLE program.
Please don't misunderstand my post, it's just I can't hear your bass unless I hear THE BASS.

Nah, no recording from the desk. I was lucky to get the desk bodged into the system in time! XLR aux outs and inserts etc instead of jacks. I only found i was doing the gig the previous day and didnt know about the desk swap till the day of the gig. I still need to get an easy reliable way of recording from the desk. I thought about one of the Zoom units, as long as i can record from the built in mics AND a line in from the desk and mix later. Dunno if you can.

I'm not sure about both simultaneously,

Here is a series of simple comparisons of that Zoom recorder a Sony PCM-D50 and various mics:

http://www.bradlinder.net/2009/03/zoom- ... tests.html
I hear differences but I always weigh this with the fact that I wasn't there ( wherever that was ) to hear to real thing. Or to see/hear what the room was like ( acoustics of the room ), and where the mics were placed.

well it looks like this one Zoom H4N -

can record both simultaneously it says for 4 channel recording, but its pretty pricey. :broke: probably easier to just record onto my laptop, mono room mic and mono feed from desk. Im sure thats adequate for most small gig recordings?

Definitely easy. If you only have 2 channel to record, recording from 2 open mics will work: Provided the are the right mics, set up correctly with respect to each other, and you have a room with good acoustics and a quiet or no audience.
But this isn't your average club gig, and most bands won't/don't have the luxury of a dedicated session for video/audio recording.
Mixing board channels or D/I lines with open mikes is an old trick, and done correctly the mix sharpens up dramatically. External mics can get get too much room ( they are usually omnis in camcorders ) and close micing is out because it is too selective with only 2 recording channels, and it can sounds too "sterile" or clean.

I've got the H4 (not the H4N) and the quality is amazing. Shame the interface is awful.

Never tried recording the mic in's and the mic's at the same time - not sure it can do it.

SAHB. Didn't know they were still around. One of my favorite bands back in the day. Nice to know they're still around.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

I loved the fact that the keyboardist didnt know how to alter the sounds on his keyboard, so the stage tech guy had to keep sneaking out from behind the bass rig and change the settings in the middle of songs. :D you can see him do it in one of the videos...
