T39s all done!

#1 Post by novasak »

Finally got them finished. I figure about 30 hours work on each box. i'm a slow worker, like to get things as close to perfect as I can. Started these back in November, could only work on 'em a hour or so a week. Screwed up box #1 on panel 3, but was still able to get the driver in and fastened. The other 3 went together great. Accidentally wired one out of phase. Even with 4 boxes, if one is wired wrong it decreases the entire output a lot! I've not been able to let these stretch their legs yet, first gig with these will be on the 24th. Otherwise just pumping tunes through them, and trying to get the limiters set correctly.

:side issue:
I set the limiters with sine wave at 60hz to 50 volts. Was able to turn it on/off, up down, even distorting, and the limiter did what it is supposed to without clipping the amp. But then I played actual music (bass heavy) and I found clipping on my amp, even before limiting. Why would that happen? Is there a certain freq which is more sensitive? I'm using XTIs and using the internal DSP. Maybe I need external DSP. But I am using external limiting.... hmmm....
:end note:

They have 3012LF and are 16 inches wide. I trimmed off the top and bottom corners to take some weight off. Plus I like the way they look like that (like the Ampegs) Found no leaks yet, each one sounds like I expected. Not as deep sounding as I like, but nice and loud like I like. Much better "smoother" sound than my old Risson horn, just about as loud (same drivers). BUT when wall loading with the V-plate, that makes a huge difference. I love free output. Also smaller and less weight even though it's 4 boxes to one box, much happier this way.

Over all, without pushing them hard yet, I would say that I am not as WOW as others seem to be about it. I do agree and would recommend to anyone to try these out. They are very nice sounding and, so far, have tons of potential! Of all the direct radiator and rented mackies I've used, these are far above the bar in quality of sound. and I only spent about $1000 for all four. An upgrade well worth the time it took.

Thanks to gdougherty for the OT12s saved me another 6 months of work...

A very nice job you've made of those; well done.
How do you find the 14" for portability? :?:

Thanks for the compliments.

The top handles are strap handles too. The top is cut out just like the bottom, at panel 9. With the two strap handles, it's pretty easy to carry with two hands, or lift on top of each other to stack. The top handle also makes it easy to pull around. I couldn't find any of the bar handles that would fit within 16 inches. Plus most of them would have stuck out and caused packing issues. The strap on the back is not enough to carry with one hand at least for me. At 16 inches, it's still a bit bulky, but still, I'm sure some of you guys would have zero issues using one hand to lift it. It is very light weight, comparing to any other sub.

oh, I figured out my limiting issues.... my preamp/limiter output was set wrong. Oh, and when you have System Architect running the XTI, you may not see the front panel clip lights flash, but you'll see it on the software. So double check both places to clipping. Another thing with the XTIs... I was trying to limit my xti2000 to 50 volts for the subs, but I couldn't get it past 45 (like 250 watts @ 8ohms I think) for the life of me. I had the XTI limiter set to -3db, turned it off, and the voltage shot up to 60+. Even at -3, it sure does keep the voltage at a safe level. Oh well, I got it figured out. Thanks for all the tips!

I see you have it worked out, but i was going to say i had the same issue with limiting that you had. Set the voltage with sine wave (or pink noise, i cant remember) then when i tried music, the amps would peak. I found it was because the Driverack PA i was using does not have brickwall limiters, so it was letting thru the bass peaks. :cussing:
-1 for thought terminating cliches.

Built and/or own:
8 x T48 24" 3015LF

2 x T36s 20" delta15L

Yeah! Nice wall of woof! I'm looking forward to your follow-up review once you've gigged with them a few times.
