Horn sheath 1/4" material from Lowes?

Helpful hints on how to build 'em, and where to get the stuff you need.

Horn sheath 1/4" material from Lowes?

#1 Post by RubiconProSound »

When I built my DR250's I used the garbage from Home Depot...this time around on the DR200's I'm going with the Arauco ply from Lowes. Does anyone have any experience with the 3 ply 1/4" from Lowes? As per the plans it looks good; (3 equal plies) but it's actually .20" as opposed to .25" so I was curious to know if this was still acceptable.

I also noticed Lowes had two different types of 1/4"... one was labled as "floor underlayment" and it appeared to be a little nicer than the standard ply offering. Same 3 plies and thickness but no visible voids on the edges.
Built so far:
AutoTuba. TAT, T18, T30, T39, SLA, SLA Pro, DR200, Omni 12TB, Omni 12 Sub, Omni 10.5,

If I am getting this right you are going to build your Dr's with 1/4"? I thought it was 1/8"?

Someone has some 1/8" 3 ply of BB in the for sale threads.

It's 1/4" for the horn sheath and 1/8" for the "butt cheeks."

It'll be fine. Plywood almost never measures the nominal dimension given.

If you get the underlayment check it for splintering. I used it on the 250's I'm building now and it worked very very well. I recall my last sheet of it a couple of years ago splintering very badly.

I've tried underlayment before, as well as regular Luan (about the same) and had problems. Standard 1/4" A/C bends so freakin' easy after messing with the Luan it's ridiculous. Well worth the extra couple of bucks. Save your sanity, there's enough on a DR to drive you nuts, no reason to add to it!

+1. I've never seen decent 1/4" A/C at Lowes or HD, I get mine from a 'real' lumberyard.

I used 1/4" nominal (.225 actual) Auraco from Lowe's. Worked fine.

I went back into Lowes today and upon closer inspection both of the 1/4" offerings I saw had the thin veneer on either side of the 3 ply... same as the Home Depot junk.

I'm going with the local hardwood shop like Bill said and be done with it. I made that mistake on the 250's...not doing it again.
