just heard my first OT12

i just finished up on mine today, and gave it a quick listen..... Amazing! i havent played it inside yet, but it was extremely loud outside.. i have to admit, i was kinda disappointed in the low end, but i guess thats what a tuba is for and i still gotta keep in mind that my driver isnt broken in and i found a couple leaks...one of them due to the phono jacks, smh.. shoulda used speakon...

Meant to be used with subs. Fixing the leaks will help considerably, airtight cabs are a must, no room for error there.

I thought leaks weren't as critical in the OT's since they're ported anyway. You don't want leaks out of the horn path and you don't want anything that whistles, but otherwise, I think it's all good.

The OT12 is not that strong below 120Hz and IIRC 120Hz xmax comes at something like 30V. It does okay for acoustic and vocals on its own, but it's not a full range box by any stretch of the imagination.

i have to admit, im still kinda disappointed on the low-end side of the OmniTop... maybe i shoulda went with the 15... now im going to feel like i HAVE TO bring a sub to every gig... its a beautiful sounding speaker though, very clear..

That's because you do have to bring a sub, if you want extension below 100Hz. The OTops, and the DRs, for that matter, are meant to run with subs for PA.

Oh, and BTW, the OT15 might have slightly more bottom, but at the expense of mid-range, right near the roll-off frequency of the woofer. Not a good compromise, IMHO. Use the right tools for the right job. Subs are designed to go low, mid-tops are for the mid-ranges and up.

If you want real bottom end, you do have to bring a sub. Either that or use something like an O15 (not an OT15) that essentially has one built in. What you're noticing is completely expected if you read the OT12 marketing page.

I feels the OT15 is a sort of in-between cab. Where low end is not high priority, yet only two cabs are the requirement. OT15 also benefits from being able to cross over a bit lower than the 12s, but you still loose some midrange, which you have to EQ up. So it's a toss up. Maybe if I use both together, an OT15 for a little added low end, and stacked with a OT12 for the midrange. That is not against the rules right? I mean, they are they same horn, so no compatibility issues right?

thats a great question... is it ok to have 2 12's and 2 15's?.... from my car audio experence, mixing speaker sizes causes cancellation issues... i have no idea about horns tho!

Phase response is the same, so there are no cancellation issues. But they would have to be separately EQ'd and powered, so more trouble than it's worth. Get subs instead.
