T18

#1 Post by Dan_S »

Today, I finally finished the T18 I've been working on since December:

I've yet to really test it yet, but going from how it sounds just in the middle of the room it's got all of the Bass anyone would ever need for a HT! Plus it's quite a bit lighter and easier to handle compared to the AutoTuba I made! It might just be a placebo, but it appears to sound a little less 'honky' compared to the AT as well. Again though, I still have to corner load it as specified in the designs.

Being stuck with MDF for this project, I was a bit concerned at how I was going to mount the cable connector (on my Omni15, the method I used was a bit 'ropey' - I'd advise against using MDF because of its 'softness'). I decided to go with a 1/4" connector, and then make a cable for whatever amp needs it. Not really having anything free to use as a mounting plate, I decided to mutilate an old CD (the spindle hole in the middle is just about the right size for screwing a connector through :) ), and it seems to work alright!

This will be used in conjunction with the SLAs I made over a year ago.

Oh, and I sawed through the power cable on my circular saw yesterday
Current builds in use:
2 x T18

Past builds:

Nice work...
Like you, I like my T18's better than my AT's. As far as the "honky" sound this might shed some light...

The top RTA chart shown below is my AT and the bottom chart is my T18. See the bump at 50 that the AT is missing? These were both taken outdoors with both subs on a concrete patio and the mic @ 1 meter. There was no boundary loading so putting either one of these in a corner changes the response dramtically. (the T18 needs the boundary loading more so than the AT if memory serves correct...)

I don't know about HT use but my T18's work fine for small DJ work (100 people +/-) I did a fireman's appreciation dinner recently with two T18's V-coupled at the front of a stage and I'm still amazed at just how much output these little 8's manage to put out. John (KaptainJohn on the forum )was with me during set-up and got a big grin on his face when I fired them up. I think he's trading in his T30's for 4 T18's. From a DJ standpont they are easy to carry and load in/out. (just reach in the mouth and grab the braces...)

You will enjoy them
Built so far:
AutoTuba. TAT, T18, T30, T39, SLA, SLA Pro, DR200, Omni 12TB, Omni 12 Sub, Omni 10.5,

The lack of a bump on the AT compensates for the cabin gain one can expect in a car, which will kick in around 80 Hz; if it had that lower bump it would be too strong around 50 Hz as a result. Cabin gain in a living room kicks below the lower bump of the T18. The reason for the bump in the T18 is a smaller rear chamber.

The AT lends itself nicely to a block-off plate to reduce the chamber volume.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.
