Clamps

#1 Post by subdude »

I'm headed for a T39 build, and I'm seeing the plans are full of references to clamping fastened pieces. I guess everyone who builds BFM needs access to large wood clamps with jaws the width of the cab they are building... do I have that right?
Is a set of clamps the only ticket? ...or are there unusual alternatives?
Any brands of clamps you guys prefer?
I found a guy who's selling some used clamps locally, and I'm trying to figure out if I should buy them or not...

Thanks...

You can never have enough clamps. :D

I use a lot of Visegrip clamps, Bessy clamps, and some plastic clamps. Also an assortment of longer bar clamps.

Cheapo pony pipe clamps. Get the pipe cut to any length you want. Heavy, not nearly as nice as the custom bar clamps, but cheap and durable.

I also find an adjustable miter clamp invaluable when working alone. It acts like a third hand.

Also cheap and pretty durable, also a pony product.

+1, there is no such thing as enough clamps in the shop 8)

For large things, there are situations where one can use straps instead of clamps, or stack some heavy things on top of a side panel while glue sets. Be creative with whatever you got available. I have seen pics of furniture, books and hifi stuff stacked on the side panel of a Table Tuba :D

I tend to look at special offers in DIY stores. Whenever I find some size of clamps that I don't have many from, I buy one or two. That's also how I obtained a few clamps similar to the adjustable miter clamps that Leland shows. Mine are fixed 90 degrees, not adjustable.

If you're stuck and are really desparate it is possible to use rope, but it's a pain and doesn't work nearly as well. Not reccomended unless you've got no other options, but it can be a lifesaver in a pinch. Just make sure you use blocks or else you'll have some lovely dents in your corners.

Or, instead of rope, just go with the old standby:

scrap wood and screws
Low End Junkie for over 20 years.

4 DR250s
4 Tuba36s @ 30" wide
2 ATs
...and a very serious addiction to the smell of BB sawdust and curing PL.

I went with scrap wood and screws to hold my Tuba 24 together while I waited for it to set:

I've been using this heavy, large, steel square to help get perfect 90 degree angles. Very handy. Normally found on milling machines, but has many uses.

hey thanks guys, good clues and ideas. I'm gonna meet up with this clamp seller guy tomorow ...I think he's unloading quite a few clamps for cheap so we'll see.

PS bassbrock, that sculpture is museum-worthy!

No Boerenbond or Aveve around here as far as I'm aware of, but there is a Toolstation counter just a few kilometers away. They have a large collection of tools for good prices. And the cheapest PU glue :ugeek:

Clamping to the max :)
I've had the same bass guitar, Westone Spectrum ST, only mine was black. And it lost all frets.

My older bro's first bass was a 2-pickup version of that same model. He still uses it for dinking around at home.
