No fasteners once PL cures?

#1 Post by EW »

Greetings, on my recent build I went with a more healthy corner radius than usual & that of course created some interference issues with my prexisting drywall screw locations. Has anyone removed & left out the screws once their PL has cured?
Built:

Yes. The first cabinet I built was a T48 that used screws. After the PL cured all of the screws were removed and the holes filled.

After that I used 1-1/4" brads...and those stay in.

Thanks guys, its hard for me to put such faith in glue alone, even though I have tested & found that the glue holding the plywood laminations together is weaker than the PL.

AS my old Cabinet making instructor in high school told me....

A properly cured glue joint will be stronger than a nailed or fastened joint. The better rated the adhesive compound, the better the joint.

Speaking of joints.... (not the funs ones.)

What do you experienced builders recommend for the joints of the cabinets?

Glued butt joints?
Glued But joints with dowels?
Glued Scarf joints?
or Finger jointing?

Glued butt joints are just fine with quality plywood. If you must use plywood with the thin veneer, route the joint just deep enough to remove the veneer. Bill and others have tested the strength of the butt joints, the PL is stronger than the wood itself!
