Amazing Speakers, Small Package

#1 Post by hoovie87 »

The new system is two O10.5's and two titan 39's 1x10. Sorry about the poor picture quality from my phone on a few of the pics. I went ahead and built a v-coupler, too for the T39. The v-coupler makes a big difference. Louder and better dispersion. On the O10.5's, I cut a 1 3/8" hole in the thick part of the horn and it worked nicely to fit right on my new tripod stands. I'm running these speakers mono though a PV900 with 300 watts/ch at 4 ohms. I use a peavey active crossover, lows to left channel, highs to the right channel on the amp. I must say, these speakers are absolutely crazy. The lows were loud and clear, and the highs outstanding with little dead spots throughout the area. I used them outside for a Christmas service and even 100 feet back, they still sounded awesome! The piano came through with authority, and the piezos picked up the vocals way better than I thought. After the service we played some Lecrea (rap) on the system just to test the woofers. It sounded like I was back in the gym at my college homecoming dance. The bass could be felt even 100 feet or so back from the stage. My friend called me from a block away just because he though it would be nice to know he could still hear the woofers clearly. How can this be possible from 300 watts? I don't know how loud the )10.5's get until my amp compresses, but they just kept cranking until they were too loud. Compared to my old system, I find with these speakers, I use almost a flat EQ. I only have to turn the midbass down slightly, but that's due to the warmness of those frequencies in my soundboard. I wonder what these will sound like when we get our new amp and soundboard...

One more comparison. I've done a lot of gigs on the FIT campus, and they have a massive Mackie system. They have two dual 15" active speakers (SA1532z, http://www.mackie.com/products ... index.html) and two 18" active subs (SWA1801z, http://www.mackie.com/products/swa1801z/index.html). The system that I built, though, blows them away. I don't know how this is possible either. The Mackies are a bit louder, but who cares when the sound quality on the Mackies are garbage compared to BFM speakers. The mackies have a terrible resonance right around the frequency of a male singer and it causes inaccurate response in everything else when you hit that. Also, the Mackie subs don't carry the sound as far as the Titans. The Titans carried the rumble from the piano, christmas, rap music everywhere and clearly. Its pretty nice to know that my 600 dollars system blows away a huge multi thousand dollar system.

Alright, I've got some pictures of my setup. I went to speakerhardeware.com and bought kits for both the O10.5's and the titan 39's. I thought they were relatively cheap. I went with the S2010 drivers in the O10.5's because the sensitivity was higher and I though that would be better outdoors. I installed the speakons w/the plates on all the speakers. I used the handles from the omnis and placed them on the titans. I put them on the top and bottom on the back as the picture shows. My router broke at a really bad time, so that eliminated me having to use a router to make handles on the titans. Who needs handles on the 10.5 anyway? I also installed the crossovers for the piezo tweeters of which I installed a 4 piezo array in series/parallel for more power handling. I thought it interesting that there is a low pass filter in the crossover...just for the ultrasonic frequencies it looks like. I'm guessing that is to keep the piezos from creating those ultrasonic highs that can hurt your ears. I just hot glued the crossover directly on the baffle. I thought the almost shag stretchy speaker carpet my local store had was sweet. But just because it was all the had left. Almost forgot, on the T39's I just hit them with some acrylic outdoor primer and 2 coats of paint from my spray gun. It seems to be holding up well.

As you can see our old system was terrible. While all the cabinets are quality, the speakers aren't really made for pro audio. They sound great in this small indoor auditorium that they are usually used in, but the didn't cut it outdoors. While the highs are clean and the deep bass is clean, the mids/midbass were terrible.

I haven't had a chance to take any more pictures yet. When we have our outreach at the end of January I'll be able to post some pictures of the entire setup.
