Source of Large Metal Grills
Source of Large Metal Grills
I'm getting close to finishing (well the basic cabinet without finish or drivers) an O15 tallboy and I've been debating about the grill. I added about an inch of depth with a recessed front baffle for this. I was going to just make a grill frame and use some standard grill cloth but I'm also considering a metal grille similar to this:

The only thing is that they are only 30" high and I need 38" for the cab (they're 22" inches wide which is more than wide enough). This is for a pair so I suppose I can do something tricky towards the bottom of the cabinet and cut a separate piece to "splice" on to make the last 8 inches. But I thought that would be a bit cheesy. Anyone have any ideas about another source for something like this to get the proper size? Thanks.

Look for expanded metal at Lowes or HD. No shipping charges.

This Ebay seller can make custom sized grills, I've contacted him and plan to purchase. He was recommended by another forum user.

Another consideration might be to just cover the mouth opening. Could look pretty cool, and may be a bit less prone to damage.
Re: Source of Large Metal Grills
Thanks all for the suggestions guys. Sounds like there's no simple answer but maybe get something custom made. Probably not too cheap though. Darn, the PE stuff looks perfect except for the last 8 inches.
I'll take another look at Lowes and HD, Bill, except that I think the stuff they had was for decorative purposes and was pretty thin. Maybe I'll try getting a bit creative with two pieces and not try to hide that fact. Lots of commercial cabinets have had split grilles that I remember (like my old Acoustic 2 x 15). Might look cool. Hmm...

Re: Source of Large Metal Grills
Just to reiterate, I researched the same thing, contacted Penn Elcom and other vendors, the pricing for custom grills was beyond my budget. This Ebay seller was recommended by another forumite, said the quality was very good and the sizing was spot on. I will be purchasing some of his grills for my next project. You can contact him through Ebay for custom size quotes.gerryc wrote:Thanks all for the suggestions guys. Sounds like there's no simple answer but maybe get something custom made. Our company makes this stuff...but the shipping costs to US may be a problem

Re: Source of Large Metal Grills
Yeah, I was thinking that too. Maybe I'll try contacting this guy and see what he can do. Otherwise I'll probably try to find a nice way to do a two-piece with the PE stuff.Mark Coward wrote: Just to reiterate, I researched the same thing, contacted Penn Elcom and other vendors, the pricing for custom grills was beyond my budget. Re: Source of Large Metal Grills
Gerry, you might check with a few local sheet-metal shops. Many can get expanded metal.
My local shop has nice stainless stuff, but it's about US$10/sqft. The Omni15TB needs about 5sqft for a full front grill. (And the shop's shear is only 36" long, so they'd have to cut it by hand, which doesn't sound very neat.)

I got a so-called pet gate at Lowe's, intended to block off a doorway to keep the dog/cat/rug rat from passing. Made of expanded steel it's a perfect grille material, $29.95 for a 24 x 36 piece. Improvise, people, improvise.

Re: Source of Large Metal Grills
That's an excellent idea. I went to the TV warehouse online to see what's available. Bunches of sizes, from 24x24 up to 48x48, at very good prices. You should be able to find this stuff at about any hardware store or lumber yard worth it's salt. Ask for screen door guards. Most of them were powder coated, some were plastic. Spray paint for a black finish will be required.
