Bogus Bargain?

#1 Post by gerryc »

Well I just picked up 4 of what supposedly are Carvin OEM versions of the Eminence Deltalite II 2512 for $60 apiece (including shipping) from Carvin's Ebay store. Here's the link:

I thought they would be great for making some OT12's on the cheap. Well, I just got them today and opened up two of them and the suspensions seem to be pushed back towards the basket. No rubbing or anything, but it's like they are permanently being "pulled inwards". I tried pushing the cone outwards from behind and I could feel a "detent" kind of feeling, probably where the suspension is supposed to be in it's neutral position.

One thing I noticed is that they were packed really tightly with some conformal plastic covered foam that looked like it must have been pushing on the cone all the while it was packed. Could this have caused the problem in the first place? I can't believe Eminence would have such poor quality control.

Could these be fixed by breaking them in or are they just crap that I should send back? :(

I decided to just return them. I've never seen anything this weird before and it was disappointing because they looked fine otherwise. I think I'd rather spend time building with good components than messing with questionable ones. I'll just hit up Leland for my next build and rest assured that I got the good stuff.

Carvin OEM versions of the Eminence Deltalite II 2512 for $60 apiece
Considering that's half the price of a "real" 2512, it shouldn't be a big surprise that there's an "ISSUE".

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Those drivers probably cost Carvin at least $80, so it's a safe bet they were defective pieces that they were trying to unload.
