4th Of July Gig

#1 Post by Connif Boudoin »

Well I wanted to give everyone my thoughts of our 4th of July gig that took place this past weekend, July 3rd and 4th.

Our setup had 3 DR 290’s per side. We were a little worried about SPL because of the number of people that was expected to be there. On the third the first band was expected to start at 10:00pm. At 9:00pm there were over 2000 people already there. Bill states that 6 boxes are good for 1000 people so we were still worried. There was a young girl who came out to perform there last year and used the DJ’s setup to sing on. Her dad insisted on using our PA because we had the stage. Anyway I setup a monitor and a cordless mike for her to use and we were getting our first taste of what was to come. We had plenty of overhead even with this young girl singing. At 10:00pm when the band started the crowds got even thicker. There were more than 3000 people that showed up, and all of them were standing at the stage as far back as you could see. We started playing and the SPL was 114db at the board at about 60 feet out. It was still over 100dB at over 200 feet out. Good thing because the people were that far out from the stage. I’ll post a link to the band that was there and you will see the people. Anyway I could not have been more pleased to what we were hearing. The system sounded awesome and we got more compliments from the people, the bands, and the BE for the night. Nice and clear. We seem to have no problems doing this many people with what we had. There is no way you can purchase a system that will give you the SPL and sound that the Bill Fitzmaurice rig did for the money it costs us. This all sounds too good to be true, But we had a great sound. You don’t know why it sounds better it just does. We know but the general public doesn’t. They just know it sounds good. If anyone wants to ask questions about the night or the system I would be glad to help.

Here is a photo early on in the evening before the main act came up. Here is the link to the band site also so you can see the number of people we are talking about.

Very cool. I'm not surprised at the success of the 6 cabs though, my experience so far is that Bill's estimates are conservative. A refreshing change from the :bull: offered by most manufacturers.

That's another setup I would love to hear, but we're all picture junkies, where are the juicy pics of the cabs? I also second the subs question.

I believe he was using 6- 18" scoops. Connif's entertaing the idea of T-48's, but so far we havn't been able to hook up so that he can hear them. Us Louisianians do love to party, so finding a weekend off between the two of us is pretty difficult. The little time that I do get off we are out of town for select softball tourns. I'll try to find time and bring him over to the horn side soon enough !!!

I do it all the time ! My daughter graduated from LSU and works at DOW, she gets the DOW, LSU alum together for tailgate parties all the time. She is also in charge of recruiting Mechnical Eng. graduates. The kids from out of state that come are in awe of how we party.

Hey Guys and Gals if there are any here, Sorry I haven't wrote back but I have been out of town the last week and a half. Went to bring my daughter to an American Kids singing Nationals competition. I'll try to get some pics of the cabs when I get a break. Like Ronn said I seem to busy all the time. It may not always be sound gigs but always busy.

The Subs that everyone is asking about is Sonic 18" scoops that have been replaced with Peavey Low Rider drivers rated at 800watts each continous. We have 8 of them. The cabs for the money and sound have been the best thing that I have heard to date. These do not sound like the original Sonic Scoops. With the new drivers this is a much better sounding cab. We ran them in a V with the mouths together. I have listened to quite a few cabs and haven't found anything I like better. Now I have spoken to Bill several times about the T-48's and to date have not had a chance to hear or compare them to what I have. I have had a chance to compare them to the following: Nexo S-2's, TCS2800's, Peavey Q Factor's, Yamaha double 18's, JBL SRX-728's, JBL 4719's, and many other single 18's. Driver to driver and power versus power the Scoops have hung in there and in most cases sounded better.

Now before everyone rags us about the cabs and tells us to use the T-48's and that they blow away what we have, I am considering it. If there is a need for us to build them in the future we may do that. I came across the site after we had our scoops already and to date we still don't seem to lack with the subs. For the 4th of july show the further we got away from the stacks the more pronouced the subs were and the more the tops would fall off. So subs were not our problem, the problem we had with our old system was our tops not keeping up. We solved that problem with the DR290's.(just down right Awsome). The more I hear them the better I like them. If I can get four T-48's to listen to, we will make a comparison and see what we come up with.

If I didn't already have the scoops I wouldn't build them, I would build the Titans. Less weight and cheaper to build, I may still build them, but for now I have what I have. All the cabs have been redone with Grills and Duratex. This also dresses up the system and it looks very professional. Thanks and take care.

No surprise there, but what that mainly shows is how poor direct radiating subs are. The horn loading of the rear wave by a scoop is better, but compared to a fully horn loaded cab, well, there is no comparison. You'd find the difference between a T48 and your scoops to be no less dramatic that that between your DR290s and what you ran before them. I'd expect four T48s would at least equal your eight scoops.

Will some BFD's be setup for an LSU game on a Saturday afternoon? I just might be able to hike over there.

You can PM me if you like - I can walk over there for one of the games.
