Tuba 30s were smashing!

#1 Post by shredder »

Hello all. I had a very hectic weekend here with our version of the "grand ol' oprey" over 20 acts on and off the stage in a 4 1/2 hour event. 2 songs each, some Kareoke(great singers) but the vast majority are small acoustic groups with a few full on bands. I had everything from banjo, mandolin, djembe, violin, acoustic and electric guitars, stand up bass ,you name it somone probably brought one along.

My appreciation of the Tuba 30 27 inch with the Delta 12 LF drivers has grown immensly. Initial impressions were of full thunderous bass, Not overpowering or boomy. Not dominant for sure but very present. Smooth and clean. I corner loaded the two cabs on opposite sides of the building along the front walls. That put them about 65 feet apart. The dispersion was surprising. Not a bad seat in the house. 400 in attendance and all got a good chest thumping. I know full well these are not considered the best subs for live music but they certainly are proven capable.

I crossed them at 100 with a 24db/octave LR filters. I also ran a 24dbLR high pass at 35.5 hz. I ran 2 pairs of horn loaded 15s at the front of house and another pair from the back corners on a 6.5ms delay. Absolutely awesome room filling hi fidelity. At last! the Tubas were the missing link in this system.

I had to open up one of the cabs to prove to a performer that I used a 12 inch driver to create that incredible low extension. He was so sure I had an 18 in there he would not listen till I opened her up for a look.

Congrats on the great gig!

How were the Tubas as far as handling? Were they as much of a pain to maneuver as is commonly stated?
You are what you do when it counts.

I'm not Shredder, but I have 24" T30's with Definimax 12's. They are definitely not difficult to move. Children can (and do) move these anywhere they can roll.

Stairs are a different story, but what sub is pleasant on stairs?

As pleasant or unpleasant as they might be on the stairs. I must counsel caution for I fear that they may not portend to be favourable when affixed o'er thy offspring's slythy toves... a fall couldst give her cause to become most frumious
There is no technical problem however complex, that cannot be solved or finessed by a direct application of brute strength and ignorance.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Point well taken.

Wheels and handles made the Tubas a snap to roll in and out. They get stored in an equipment room on site so they only have about 400 feet to roll and they are home. I would say they are easier to move than any other subs I have worked with.
