Full Home Theater BFM

#1 Post by Brew »

I have just completed a home theater system. It consists of TLAH mains, SLA center, Table Tuba for bottom, and some similarly inspired rear surrounds.
All drivers in main and center channel speakers are Onkyo 4” from Madisound and Onkyo auto tweeters from PE. Rear Surrounds have 2 onkyo mids in each. All were built to plan specs; however all the drivers were rear mounted, with a round over on the baffle face. The SLA was built with the curved front version.

Build was pretty straight forward, however, I used “China” half inch ply. Do not use! In future I would use a solid wood baffle, BB ¾” of even mdf.
The Table Tuba needed to be re-folded in order to meet criteria set by wife to “breath new life” into a beautiful old Victrola. It’s a single 8” TB driven by PE240 sub amp.

I cannot provide scientific measurements or charts, but here’s a shot at describing outcomes. For reference, my speakers normal are 2 way Scan Speak “Borealis” complemented with similar mtm center and surrounds. Bass is provided by a pair of corner loaded, 1 cft sealed Peerless XLS powered w/500 watts. (I’d say system is “higher end” in components).
Room the BFM system was installed in, is larger than my living room; speaker distance to seating was +20 feet, 20 feet between Left &Right, and open an additional 18 feet to side.
Performance:
Comments from a tough critic, (wife), “Spectacular” clear, more defined than our system”, true to real sound”
I would include very dynamic. The range from earthquakes to glass breaking, rain, and vocals in movies is all there. I would add that music takes on that very Live sound. You all know the tuba horn design has a great sound! The Table Tuba is all there! Delivering a sweet musical tone, and when called- chest thumping sound.
My Son-in-law and daughter,(who the build was for), sat wide-eyed, constantly changing from action movies, to Bonneroo concert videos to test the sound.
There is a huge “wall” of sound produced, but separation, depth, is there as well.
Need a center channel? Do the curved version of the SLA! Do not mess with anything else.
To sum up this is not a “home theater” sound system! But a “theater” or concert hall sound system!

Click on the Where Are We? Frappr Map key at the bottom of the page and use that as your photo host, then bracket the url with to insert the photo into the text. Please crop the photos to 50-60Kb so they don't overflow the screen.

You can post them individually by clicking on them and finding their address under 'properties', as in the case of this one.

Wow, looks amazing. If you don't mind me asking - what was the total cost of all the supplies to put everything together?
