Crossover frequency

EQ guys are using on their cabs/systems. A good starting place if you don't have your own RTA.

Crossover frequency

#1 Post by paul van dort »

Hello,

I am using an Altair crossover, were the X-0ver point is defined by the kind of filtercard you plug into the motherboard.

This limits my choice of Crossoverpoint today to 240Hz or 90Hz. (Or I would have to alter the filtercards)

I am using one Titan39 with 2 BP102, while the 2 tops are a 12 inch Australian Monitors X1 (EV SX300 copy).

What would be the best X-over frequency? 240Hz or 90Hz?

Paul

Thanks for the feedback.

So far I was afraid to use such a low crossover point (90Hz), because it would put much more load on the tops than on the subs.
I started with bi-amping to be able to put less load of the tops

The curve of the Titan shows performance at least until 200Hz. Why not use it?

What is the reasoning to favor the 90Hz X-over point?

I'm sure you are right, I just want to understand the background theory.

Thanks,

Kind regards,
Paul

Above 100Hz you can point the direction the sound is coming from. You don't want that to be your subs, as they sound a bit 'honky'. They'll go loud, but are not very pleasant to listen to at higher frequencies. Just try it, there's nothing you can damage if you do.

Subs should only produce the sounds they're made for: low freq's. So between 240 and 90 the obvious would be 90Hz.

BTW, nice to see some more BF designs in the ´neighbourhood´
BF cabs built to date:
2x T48 21" 3015LF; 1x T48 24" 2xBP102; 1x DR250 2510 loaded, cross firing; 4x DR200 Beta 8, melded array; 1x TT HL-10c; 2x WH Beta 8, melded 'array'; 3x AT 15" Tang Band W8-740P; 1x AT 15" JBL GTO1014
