How much Duratex?

#1 Post by David Robinson »

How many gallons of Duratex would I need to cover two 20" wide T39's and two OT15's. Rolled on using the roller grade Duratex?

Also, what's the shelf-life of Duratex once the can is opened?

The second question I can easily answer, since I have a small amount in one bucket that's been in the garage over a year. There's a funny-looking color that forms on the top (maybe mold?), but the stuff stirs up and applies well. I did the first coat on the TB15s with some from it, and finished the cabinets with a new gallon I just got.

The first question .. the stuff goes a long way. I can't rememebr how many cabinets I've covered with one gallon. You just might cover all of the ones you mentioned with one gallon.

Good luck!

If you just put the cover back on you'll probably get a thick film build up for the next time you go to use it. Therefore, what you should do is take some plastic, like saran wrap or garbage bag, and lay it tight on the liquid Duratex and then close the lid. I have high gloss black from three years ago and satin black from two years ago using this technique. I works great, I doubt the shelf life is any less than if you didn't open it.

Also, because Duratex dries so fast, don't leave the lid off as you're working.

As for your coverage question, my guess is one gallon for the four cabinets. It doesn't seem to use as much as one would think.

One gallon should do it. Make sure you get thin, but complete coverage with your first coat. Then you can do the texture coat as thick or thin as necessary to use the remaining Duratex evenly.

Those TB15's look awesome btw. The "mold" is probably just one of the components separating. Since it's water-based, it's easily remixed.

Or, you could simply read the directions from Duratex. They say to spritz the top of your leftover material with water to stop it from drying in the can. If you over spritz, just pour off the excess before stirring.
