Finally heard a DR250 as a bass cab

#1 Post by Tim A »

My bassist came over yesterday for some goofing around. I had asked him to bring his bass and amp head so we could hear a DR250 with a bass through it. Although I hadn't asked, he also brought his Ampeg 2 x 10 classic cabinet.

It's a good thing he did. Without the Ampeg, we would've thought the DR250 sounded good, and that's all. It would've been "Yeah, it makes a good bass cab." and left it at that.

But comparing the two was a real eye opener. It was noticably louder and clearer. It sounded better than the Ampeg even with the full crossfired tweeter array. I did stick some cardboard over half the tweeters at one point to cut them back some, better yet! There didn't seem to be a huge difference in extension between the two, at least to our ears.

It's also about 10-12 lbs lighter. He couldn't believe there was a single 10" in there making all that sound. As a result he's going to use it at our NYE gig and see how it does live. Should be interesting!

There is no technical problem however complex, that cannot be solved or finessed by a direct application of brute strength and ignorance.

That's only because Kiwis get New Year first, else they wouldn't know when it would be! :P
