Titan 48's and DR 280's over achieving
I just did a gig last weekend at a pretty big concert hall here in Louisville Ky. called expo five capacity is about 1200 to 1500 depending on chairs and seating. There is a house system set up in there consisting of eight EAW sb 850's and Eight EV double 15" 2 inch compression horn high paks 4 each side of stage. A friend of mine owns the in house system and the promotor did not want to pay the price to use it so he payed me extra to use mine. This was a dj party for a large biker group. I had planned to take my 6 DR 280's and 6 titan 48's and fiqured we could at least match up pretty well , but another gig came the same night and we were only able to take 4 and 4. My Dr's have the deltalite 12's and the 12 piezo array. Two of my Titans had the 3015lf and the other two were double 4012 loaded. I had a qsc rmx 1850hd bridged on the 3015lf titans and a plx 3402 steareo on the double 4012's. A QSC PLX 2402 handled the DR 280's. I told my crew boys there is no way we are going to keep up with the existing system so lets just do the best with what we have available. I use crank up stands with my DR's hung from a piece of 4 foot trussing mounted across t-bars. The Titans were V-plated and wall loaded about maybe 14" out from the wall. We fired it up and whoa it sounded like everything could just breath no cancellations to worry about ( due to size of venue). It was the most even coverage I have heard from this system since I have owned it this was probably my 4th gig with this and we got it right this one. It was loud and clear dont get me wrong we were squeezing every bit out of it to stay out of clipping but for the most part it remained clean the whole night with about 1100 to 1200 ticket sales.Toward the end of the night I started to put my foot in it causing the pretty red lights to come on on peaks but everything ung in there. The hardest thing for me that night was convincing that we were only using "my little homemade speakers" against the big stuff. I could not believe when I walked back and looked onto the stage and saw the pack space of what was there and my pack space. It was worrying the system owner so that he came back asking me what are those, what do they have in them, do you have subs under the stage. Thank god for grill foam and metal grill because he would have shit if he knew he was listening to piezo's. I also used two yorkvilles for nearfill. I have been ok with this system at my previous smaller gigs but not floored after dialing them in on the ultracure and going to summed output on the dcx 2496 this thing kills. The guy that runs this venue now wants to talk about me providing sound for this venue. By the way I spin Hip/RnB off rane serato so Low end and clarity is avery big part of my show. That night we also got a bid chance to do a rapper named Plies in Paducah Kentucky after the first of the year if that goes through anybody in Nashville is welcome to come and check out the rig. I can handle a show like that because rappers are easy he is only using a two track and mic's. Like I explain to the sound guys they have cnc routers I have a cnc router they have engineers I am an engineer but I have Bill Fitzmaurice. Boys to sum it all up this rig just plain got up and ran and we nailed the placement and processor settings. Sorry so long but maybe this will help someone out there.
