Auraco plywood from lowes
Auraco plywood from lowes
My first titan 48 build was pretty much a nightmare with warpage of the auraco plywood. Most everyone agreed the main problem was the humidity here in the Houston area. During that build the average temp during the day was up close to 100 degrees, probably hotter than that in my shop. I just started my second titan 48, same material. This one is going very smoothly. The temp this time is low 80's during the day. Humidity probably the same. I'm also being careful to store cut pieces laying flat rather than on edge. I think it makes a difference from one piece of plywood to the next. I think some of it is better. The warpage this time is no more than I would expect. Last time was a nightmare. I don't really have any options for material other than the auraco. I checked out the russian birch at McCoys, it was stored standing on edge and some of the sheets were terribly warped brand new, and it was $30 for a 5x5 sheet. The auraco goes for $26 for a 4x8 sheet. Auraco it is. Second build is going MUCH faster than first. I actually enjoy making the internal braces. I use hole saws for the smaller holes and a flycutter for the larger ones. With either, I cut half way through from one side, turn the piece over, and go the rest of the way from the other side, using a slow speed drill press with either. Cutting half way through with the hole saws makes it easy to get the plug out, because it is sticking halfway out when you get through. It also gives a clean edge on both sides because you never pushed through. I'm using half inch plywood for the smaller braces, 1/4" for the larger ones.
i hear ya, this houston humidity is horrible.
first omni 12 got so warped that I had to trash it, then I went out to lowes and bought 3/4 inch 7 ply arauco. I know its overkill and probably screwed up a few dimensions, but that stuff DOES NOT WARP. Rather cheap too.
However for my t36 build, im gonna have to find some 1/2 inch, dont want to recalculater ALL of the measurements for this one. Guess I'm just gonna have to build it the day I buy the wood.
