Wedgehorns

#1 Post by jswingchun »

This isn't going to be much of a review as I have only used my new wedgehorns in a practice setting so far, but I thought I would post something anyway.

This was our first practice of this new band. Rock music practiced too loud for the small room we are in.

I built the wedgehorns with the Dayton drivers. I used an EQ to cut frequencies below 100 hz. I built three, but only used two at practice.

When we were checking them before practice, the guys wanted me to add lows to make them sound better. I told them let's just try them out.

They more than held up to what I was looking for. They cut thru the live drums and loud guitar and bass without a problem. Off axis response was great.

Here is one of them:

Here is part of the room with both wedgehorns, you can see my Omni 10/10.5 bass stack too:

Light weight, cheap and got the job done. Didn't miss the low end when all the instruments were blaring. Singer said he heard himself better than he ever has before. Though it's going to be a while, I can't wait to have a chance to try them out on a stage set. Great stuff!!

Exactly. A lot of people don't understand that monitors don't have to sound good. In fact, a vocal monitor that sounds like a stereo speaker is counterproductive. I tell people all the time that if they heard my monitor mix alone they'd think it was the worst sounding system they ever heard, but it'll cut through a mix like you can't believe.

Kudos to your band members for giving them a chance without EQing the piss out of them. You're going to love them on stage!

They were skeptical, but converted quickly when they heard it all together.

Thanks. It's a 1969 or 1970, I think based on the serial number. I had a former band member who worked at a music store. He took it in on trade for $75 then set it aside for me. The body is kinda beat up, especially the back. I think whoever had it before played in a country band and wore a giant cow head belt buckle. Plays great though.

That's a killer deal for a bass worth at least $2000. Way beyond killer.

Yup. I run one at every show. It clearly outshines the 12" drivers in the other guy's regular old monitors. You do have to be careful of power, but I haven't played a show yet where it wasn't enough. Loud little bastards they are!

I did mention that is was our first practice. I doubt it will stay this tidy for long.

I didn't realize at the time how great of a deal it was. Of course this was about eight years ago, so it was before I started looking at what things were worth on eBay. Was there even a such thing as eBay that long ago?

If you are only running vocals thru your monitors you won't regret it.
