THTLP characteristics for REW room sim

#1 Post by DaveMacKay »

I have two minimum-size (15"x18"x72" with 12” RSS315HF-4 driver) THTLPs in my listening room. They are vertical (i.e., standing upright) with the mouths firing towards the ceiling.

I've been looking to improve the placement of my speakers, subs, and listening positions in my room. I've been using the "Room Sim" capability in REW (Room EQ Wizard) to try out different configurations and to see if adding a third subwoofer might be worthwhile. I've taken measurements to validate the Room Sim projections. Unfortunately, the measurements do not match well with the Room Sim projections.

Among the (many) reasons for the discrepancy might be that I have not described the THTLPs properly in REW. I know that this isn't an REW forum, but I thought this would be the best place find out how to best characterize the THTLP to REW.

When simulating room responses, for each subwoofer REW wants to know its type and position (where the sound is coming from).
  • REW doesn't know about horns. Subwoofer enclosures can be specified as either "sealed" or "ported". I tried both but didn't see much difference.
  • I set the position of each THTLP as being at centre of the mouth (i.e., 6' above the floor).
I would be grateful for suggestions as to what I ought to tell REW for it to be able to model the THTLP subwoofers more accurately.

Room sim predictions may or may not be accurate. The sub crawl is accurate.
