KAPPALite 3012LF Driver in a Tuba

#1 Post by Joman116 »

Hello Bill Et Al:

I currently own the below

2x T39 20" loaded with Eminence KAPPALite 3012 LF (qty 1 each)
QSC PLX1804 Amp (powering above, rated at 900w x 2 channel. I run the qty 2 T39 together on 1 channel)
Driverack 260
Qty 2 Eminence KAPPALite 3012 LF drivers

As many already know, the T39 are fantastic form factor performing till about 40hz before it drops off.

My goal is to maximize my current amp and extra 3012 drivers to build a single Tuba 30/45 or even 60, order to hit the sub 40hz frequencies with authority. This sub would run on independent setups (not with t39)

1.) Can the Tuba 30/45 or 60 use the Eminence KAPPALite 3012 LF driver? Space is a concern so I want to maximize into a single Tuba..so go quantity 2 of the driver into 1 cab.

2.) Size..these would be stored in my garage when not gigged...so the less "floor space" and "taller" the better. The T45 and T60 are meant to be laid on its side? (meaning the long 45"/60" dimension is along the floor)? If so then I think the only option is a T30. If I can load dual 12"..I need to determine the optimum width. I see the SPL graph below which shows 27" width with dual driver. Remind me what changing the width would do..increase/decrease sensitivity (meaning ..output)?

3.) My amp..more than sufficient for dual driver setup for a T30?

Would appreciate input. Kindly respond addressing the point (1 or 2) so I know what it is related to.

Just to understand a little better.....are you planning to run the Tuba along with the T39s? Recorded music or live sound?

Run Tuba separate, never with the t39

Good. From what I saw in the plans, the T45 and T30 are the only real candidates for the 3012LF. But, the form factor of the T45 is way, way better. You can roll it. The T30 is a giant square box and would be difficult to move. The T45 can be stood up to store.

Your amp should drive a 2 driver (Parallel 4 ohm) T45 to it's 50 volt limit off one side with a little headroom to spare. But be aware, your 2 T39 will still be louder overall....just can't get down as low. So, the question is, what are you putting through 'em? And do you really have content that goes that low? If not, just build two more T39s....

Thanks for the response Bruce. For the t45, it's end firing. Does that mean aside from laying on its side, the throat can also me pointed up (standing) when played? What about down? In storage (garage) I'm trying to understand if I can still play it when it's stood up. In live performance it would be laying on its long side.

This single dual driver setup would be for specific use cases where I'm playing more deeper EDM/hip hop.

Sure, you can play it standing up - pointing up or down. Obviously, you need to get it up off the ground if you are ground-firing it. In a garage, there's so much cabin gain that it really won't matter......the cops will be there before you decide which is louder.

I need to understand what the minimum width for dual driver in a t45 would be.. Any idea?

Minimum cab width for a 2x12 is 30 inches.

Where in Texas are you?

So then I am looking at a minumum dimension of 30x24x45, which is potentially doable for me if standing up. Need to think about my garage layout a bit more..

I'm in DFW.
