Trimming down an existing T30

#1 Post by nick birkby »

Hi all,
I built my first Tuba about 20 years ago- the original design ( my review is still on the Tuba page Im happy to see! :) . Ive got a storage conundrum now and am wondering if it might be possible to carefully shorten the existing boxes ( full 30 inches wide) down to something more manageable, in the region of 18-22 inches perhaps. Id appreciate any sage advice on this or simply against attempting it.

My alternatives are to sell the cabs and start fresh BUT: The unit has the very nice JBL 12" drivers which Im not keen to let go off, and I am not sure that the cabs would be an easy sell minus drivers here where I live in Cape Town South Africa. Also I like them.

Thanks so much, Nick

I

They could be made narrower, but it wouldn't be easy, especially moving the driver hole.

Yes, thank you Bill, I dont think it would be easy at all compared to the rest of the cuts.
Ive subsequently spoken to someone who may be interested in the cabs, he knows horns and may want to use them in a small club installation.

Id be tempted to build some Titan 39s if the 2206 drivers would behave in them.

Don't move the hole; move both sides, one at a time. Cut half of your desired width reduction on one side, then glue the new side back on. Repeat for the other side.

Ok thanks, so in theory I could take 3-4 inches off each side.. But yes its a job for a big saw and will almost certainly hit some screws.

As I said I may have a buyer for the cabs, and perhaps its time for me to make sawdust again.
Out of curiosity would the JBl 2206 drivers work in a Titan 39? Its a great looking design.
