Laminater came out this evening. Printed out some plans. Laminater died. Hope it's not a sign....

Uncovered my big box of Monacor tweeters that I bought back along for a melded array....

Whilst looking around Facebook Marketplace a nice Lab Gruppen PDX3000 amp popper up. Haven't dived too much into that but seems it has loads of power, built in DSP/limiter etc. And it weighs in about 6kg which is a bit better than the 30kg for the MPX1200!!

That is lovely indeed. I still have my autotuba but haven't used it in a car in nearly 10 years. It was a perfect fit in the car I drove back when I built it and I immensely enjoyed it. Never played it loud. Yet the truly deep bass from a horn loaded sub is deeply satisfying. It just doesn't fit well in the current car. Which also has an in dash stereo that is not easily replaced with something more flexible, like crossovers, sub amp etc. On top of that it is an old Toyota. It just won't die :owned:

I keep saying it and I will continue to say it, the T39 is the most versatile cab. We all want to build DR's but the OT's are great (and much easier to build.

If you want me to get details of your old account or merge them, just send me a DM. West Yorkshire, out.

Chris.
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

My plan of using my space didn't work sadly. It was a commercial unit I was renting that was just for storage ultimately and when the price of the rent increased it just wasn't worth while keeping on, and everything went in a shipping container at a fraction of the cost of the unit. Sadly.

But I find myself day dreaming of building such cabinets again sitting here reading all the plans.

I think I've decided! As I am limited as to where I can build anything (Its looking like it will be in the garden) I will struggle to make anything complicated as I wont have the space to leave it and walk away for any period of time then come back to it! So I think I am going to go for a pair of Tuba 30's as I already have the LAB12's that were pulled from the Titan39's I made 13 years ago. And rather than messing about trying to find some tops to go with them (I used a pair of Mackie SRM450v2 with the Titans) I might aswell bite the bullet and go for the OT12's - A pair of used SRM450's are still demanding £400.00 GBP and although I sold the Mackies to a friend, thats used them probably twice so I could probably get them back, I still find myself looking at other tops that could go with these subs, such as Martin Blackline XP15's that are a massive £1200 each, FBT Promaxx 114a around £800 each or slightly cheaper RCF Art 715's at just £550 each.... I can purchase a pair of 3012HO's brand new delivered for around £400.00, and I already have a stack of Monacor tweeters that I bought 13 years ago for the purpose of building tops, so there isnt much more that I'd need to spend out other than some PL, foam, crossover components, and some sheets of plywood (my local lumber yard has hardwood ply 8ftx4ft sheets for £25.00 each)

The sole purpose of these will be for a "mobile disco" style setup, so playing everything music wise from 60s right up to new releases, from Righteous Brothers to Prodigy, pop to trance

I need to spend more time here reading up again as its been a while since I played with gear, so i've forgotten how I set up the DEQ, DCX etc (which have also been sold but to repurchase would still come in at a lower price than a pair of new tops, and would still be required anyway)

Basically I'll be starting again

Ahhh, a journey has begun! Kudos. A whole bunch of years ago I built a pair of DR250s in my back yard, on the hood of a Volvo 745. I think you will manage just fine.

No way I'd have the skills to go for DR's!

Is there a massive difference between them and the second best?

When I discovered this forum I too started out wanting to build DR's. I was convinced by Bruce and others here to go with OT12's. So I just finished a build of four OT12's and loaded them with Eminence 2512's and N210T compression drivers. They sound absolutely fantastic. While I've never heard the DR250's I can't imagine wanting more. These 4 OT12s can outrun the four Titan 48's I also built. (I stubbornly stuck to my plan to build 48's and not 39's lol) All they need is a little roll off above 1K to tame them just a tad. But only a bit.

I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Builds:
4 x 24" Titan 48's loaded with 15's
4 x OT-12's with CD horns
Considering:
Simplex 10/12 wedges
Simplex subs
Simplex bass/guitar cabs

Haha! I was only trying to point out that, initially, I built speaker cabs outdoors, in the back yard.
DR250 vs OT12? No massive difference except driver size. Carry on with the OT12. :)

Peak output capability between the two designs is going to be much the same. The DR's will just require less power to get there.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

Thats great to read - Them OT12's look very straightforward, and although I no longer have a volvo to use as a workbench (I've had 2x V70's) im sure I can manage to build some of these in the garden on a bench!

I'll leave the DR's till we have bought a new house with a garage/workshop where I can take my time to build
