driver compatibility

#1 Post by antipodes »

Hi/kia ora from New Zealand ,

I've just joined the forum to garner as much info before ordering plans and building.

I'm intending to build some easy to handle , longer throw mids for the occasional outdoor gig I mix for in the summer months.

Several years ago I built some compact Cubo18 subs loaded with RCF L18P 300 drivers and they have proved very successful in a multitude of rooms & outdoors.

I also have multiple RCF N850 & N980 compression drivers & horns.

I have spent time reading the specs for both OT15 and Jack lite.

I realise the designs are intended as mid-highs but access at reasonable cost to the drivers here is difficult.

NZ is a small and very expensive country for sound hardware , retail price on speakers/amps/components is generally +50% to +100% in $US terms to those of you in the lower 48.

Post -Covid freight charges have gone ballistic removing the option to purchase from Parts Express etc and ship.

I'm proposing to utilise my existing drivers which have only had light use.

Cubo 18's to 90Hz
For the OT15 - RCF L15P540 [90 to 350/400Hz]

For the Jack Lite - B&C 10FW64 [350/400 to 1200-1500 Hz]
RCF N850 12-1500Hz up

I have dbx drive rack 260 for active crossover and sufficient amps with headroom to burn to run all of the above.

Also the option to use OT15 & RCF horns only for acoustic sets if possible.

Is the above achievable ?

I have the specs of both the L15P540 & B&C 10FW64 if required.

Thanks in advance
Robbie

OTop 15 preferred specs are fs 35-50Hz, Qts .30-.50, Vas 150-350L, xmax no less than 5mm. A rising response into the midrange is required. JLite 10 preferred T/S specs are Fs 60-80Hz, Vas 25-50L, Qts 0.22-0.5, minimum Xmax 4mm.

You should not combine these two designs. Both have woofer output quite capable to at least 1.2kHz.

2" throat HF drivers aren't suited to our designs, they don't go high enough. Horizontal HF horns will not work, cabs loaded with them cannot be stacked.

Bill , thank you for the prompt reply and the necessary info.

RCF L15P 540 - complies with the OTop 15 preferred specs except that Vas is 100L [ fs 50Hz, Qts 0.39, Vas 100L, xmax 7mm ]

B&C 10FW64 - fully complies with JLite 10 . [ fs 63Hz, Qts 0.23, Vas 27L, xmax 5mm]

Can you link me to a response chart for the JLite 10 please ? or is it similar to Jack110 ?
The response curve of B&C 10FW64 https://www.bcspeakers.com/en/products/ ... 0/8/10FW64 suggests that it may struggle to cross effectively below 150Hz with the subs.

My 2" horns are already boxed and handled as separate components and the proposed build[s] are intended as longer throw , high quality sound for dispersed mature audience at occasional outdoor gigs.

It's highly unlikely that I will need/want multiple bin stacks .
If necessary I have 6 or 8 Pyramid TW44 sitting on a shelf unused to enhance the HF.

I also have 2 x eminence ASD 1001 & 2 x Celestion CDX-1-1745 [ 1" x 80 w continuous] that have had minimal use in passive monitors available .

I do not have narrow 1inch horns locally available for vertical in cabinet mounting and so far have not been able to identify a source locally.

I appreciate you are a busy man but any further insight would be appreciated, even if it's " buy the recommended drivers or find another design"

best regards
Robbie
