DR250 & T39 for bass

#1 Post by andy73 »

I finally got the chance to play this combo in a live setting. Playing in my garage I found it very pleasing. It just did not seem as loud as I expected with my eden WT300. But... once I got into a larger room the combination was amazing. I have only heard that much clear, authoritative bass coming out of PA systems in large venues. The 250 and T39 allowed me to dial in a very warm, low rumbly tone that was actually clear. Or a very punchy tone that still had that low end that makes you smile.

Since I am not totally complete with the T39 (no paint, still bare wood) I sat it on its side so it was not too conspicuous, with the DR on top of that. The room we played in was about 100 ft wide 70 ft deep and about 15 ft ceilings.

When I have played here before I used a 2 x 12 and a 600 watt amp. When they would set levels I could always hear a distinct difference when I was coming through the mains. The ground shaking lows came alive, although it always seemed to muddy up my tone.

When setting levels this weekend, I could hear no difference. I really don't think they had me in the subs much at all. But they loved the sound!

I got multiple compliments on tone from musicians and non alike, and having the low end authority helped drive the "feel" of the songs.

I am very happy with the build. I plan on doing an A/B comparison with an eden metro setting on a 4 x 10 cab (so 6 x 10 total). I'll post the unscientific results here when that is done.

I let my brother (another bass player) borrow this combo. I asked him to give me an honest opinion. In short he, his bandmates, sound guys, and people in the audience were amazed.

He compared directly to his eden metro (2 x 10 combo) plus a 4 x 10 ampeg cabinet with about 500 watts. In sheer volume they were about the same. Keep in mind that its a 12" and a 10" with 300 watts against 6 10" with 500 watts. The part he was most amazed with was the clarity. He plays a 5 string american fender jazz deluxe, and was very happy with how the tone of his bass was allowed to come through the mix.

When he played live he got tons of compliments on how it sounded. This is coming from people who had a week earlier been involved with a band who had a bass player with an 8 x 10.

Now I just hope I can get it back from him... :)
