How to make it a bit easier...

#1 Post by djshortpaul »

Hi

Here's a little tip that might help if you're building some speakers from the Bill Fitzmaurice plans. What I've done is make a copy of the plans and delete anything that isn't important to me. For example, if you're using a paint finish then delete all the stuff on carpet covering. I've managed to get the OT12 plans down to 10 pages which makes them much easier to understand. I removed stuff about the 2x12" version and as I've done the basic horn with full grille (the easiest one!) you can cut the plans right down in size. This made it easier for me so there was nothing I felt that I had to skip through.

Just make sure you make a copy first!

Cheers. Paul.

What I have been doing is archiving a copy (the original) and then renaming the copy I work from. I haven't cut out the stuff I don't need...but I highlight the stuff that I do, as well as write questions or comments or notes to myself in the work copy. So far I have not gotten PL on my keyboard ;-)

I name all my plans files with the yyyy.mm.dd suffix appended, so I have version control between different versions of plans. None are are ever discarded or overwritten.

They are then stuffed into an encrypted ZIP file and duplicated on separate drives. I have a 100 stack DVDs holding a lifetime of programming, photos, and BFM plans at the ready, in case of fire.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

I also have an external HD with quickly accessible backups of everything and everything valuable also duplicated on DVDs/CDs

Well worth doing, as I found out two years ago when my drive broke and I lost everything!
