Omnitop 12 with crossfiring piezo's

#1 Post by brodave2 »

I just got the first one finished and plugged it up to my home stereo, an old pioneer receiver rated 40 watts per channel. First thing I did was grab the volume knob and turn it down, way down. These puppies are LOUD! Compared to my stereo speakers, which are really sweet, these puppies are LOUD. I have built and auditioned many speakers over the years with this same amp, and these are the first to really shock me. All the other speakers I have auditioned in this way are very similar in output to my home stereo speakers. The one biggie was the lack of bass with the omni, but that was to be expected, I never intend to use them without subs. I'm going to do some more comparisons at my church where I can power them up a little better and compare some other speakers at proper power. They do need a bit of eq to sound right, but it's maybe 3db here and there, nothing big. You wouldn't need a surgical eq to fix it, the 7 or 9 band eq's on powered mixers would do it. When I test them at my church I'll probably run them off my Driverack 260 and RTA them and see just what it takes to make them flat. I can't wait to do a show with them. My big rig is grossly overkill for a lot of the jobs I do, so this will be sweet, a pair of 30# speakers on sticks replacing 150# double 15's with 30# magnets on the horns alone. I hope I'm similarly shocked when I get my first Titan 48's built.
