Dump the 1/4" and replace all of those ends with Speakon. It's just a better, more reliable connector that won't pull out of the cab if someone steps on it.
You won't regret it. I don't have anything but Speakon in my rig....and only real Neutrik ones, none of the crappy knockoffs.
Thanks Bruce, at least I won't have to buy much wire to do this changeout. I remember reading in another post that you place importance on cabling and i concur that this is important. I also remember that you make all of your cables and curious about who you buy wire(without ends) from? The only "problem" is that all of my cables are 2 conductor, so I can't use the ability of speakon to do splits in cab, but that can be remedied by buying some 4 conductor cable. This wouldn't be too bad as I keep amps near or on stage to reduce speaker cable lengths, and use the sends on my snake to send signals to the amps from FOH. Also, do you like the 90 deg. speakons on the monitor cables?

Oh.. I found this : http://www.parts-express.com/13-awg-4-c ... t--100-485 which can be ordered by the foot. Bruce what gauge wire you like to use for speaker wire? I like to run amps near/on stage to shorten speaker wire runs and use sends on my snake to send signals from FOH to onstage amps. Do you like the 90 deg. speakon connectors on the monitor speakers?heavybdrums wrote:Yea I figured that the 2 x 5-1/2" by 1-1/2" ports in proportion to the 2 x 1/4" new ports was insignificant compared to the problems with the plastic threads stripping on the plastic 1/4" jacks (already having problems) was worth it. Once i get to building subs and tops, I will be using no 1/4" jacks and only the twist lock neutrik speakon jacks as they are relatively airtight. On this note, for the W10's which have the "handle holes" sealed, and the ports in the horn body, would you recommend not using the open 1/4" jacks or in this case would it also not matter? Currently, since I have many 1/4" speaker wires I was figuring on using 1/4" for the monitors, and speakons for mains and subs, which would also help when setting up to not confuse which speaker wire goes to which, or is this idea silly? Thanks soooo much for your info.Bill Fitzmaurice wrote:True, but much too small to upset things. All of my cables are two-wire 12ga.. While I've always used Neutrik NL4 connectors, they came out with a new connector a year or so ago called the NL2 - it's not the old 2 pole connector with the barrel clamp (I hate those), it's shaped just like the NL4 only it's just two-pole and it costs about a buck less.heavybdrums wrote: The only "problem" is that all of my cables are 2 conductor, so I can't use the ability of speakon to do splits in cab, but that can be remedied by buying some 4 conductor cable. If you aren't bi-amping your tops, there's really no need to run 4-wire cable. I do run a 4-wire cable to my subs when I split 'em, but they have 2 NL2 connectors on each end for the split out.
I like to keep it simple - any cable can work on any cabinet and I don't have to worry about which one is which.
Now, it I was running large ground stack systems all the time, that would be a different situation.

I buy mine from a local Rapco/Horizon dealer. Sometimes I'll split a spool with him and get 100-250 ft. I really don't buy speaker cable anymore as I have a lot of cables in different lengths.
There are sites out there where you can buy a spool of 12ga for a decent price. When I bought mine, I was paying about 70 cents a foot for the 12ga.....but, I was getting a pretty good deal.
This is what I'd buy if I needed to build some quality cables. Use what you need and sell off the rest already made up to other bands. But 250 feet of cable isn't really overkill by the time you figure mains and monitors.

And no, I don't use any angled ends. More expensive and I don't see any real benefit....plus, there's no guarantee that they will be pointing down - it depends on the orientation of the monitor and how the jack is mounted.

TYTY that makes it even cheaper and I will go 12 ga ...regardless of length for the same reasons you used it.Bruce Weldy wrote:All of my cables are two-wire 12ga..
