Starting tops and Monitors

#1 Post by bradn7 »

Hey there everyone. Last year my dad and I built some Titan 48 subs. They have performed awesomely and I have been biting at the bit to finally get some montiors and Tops going. The monitors are going to be 4 wedgehorn 8's and one Wedgehorn 10 for the Drummer. The Tops are going to start off with 4 Omnitop 12 J-array's.

Just purchased the wood and speakers. Thank you in advance to Leland for the speakers. The components for the crossovers are on order from partsexpress. Should be here prolly in the next week or so. I am excited to get started on these.

Off to a good start already.... The wood came in and it's not the right one we ordered. These have a veneered face.... so we are calling the company and seeing if they can swap out for what we ordered. As for speakers and other parts, I am looking forward to those hopefully at the end of the week. Will make the crossovers first and break in the speakers

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE, my speakers and crossover components came in. Tomorrow I will start making the crossovers and posting pictures. That way if I make any accidents someone on here may be able to correct me before I get to far along.

Building crossovers early is a good idea. Means that you don't rush them at the end in a 'I wanna hear them' type building frenzy. Not as easy on the DR series, but Otops have lots more wiggle room.

Hey all I finally have been able to get started on the crossovers. Here are the low's mounted to the boards. I thought'd I'd make sure that this looks like the diagram. I will need to put jumpers between the coils and resistors and then a wire from the Cap to the 30 ohm resistor. Let me know what you guys think. I am really excited to get these things going!

Where's the 15uf shunt cap and the .5mh shunt coil?

Those are going on the separate board. I didn't want to make my first crossovers difficult. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get those finished and posted on the site. I plan to have those done on Monday. I am looking at my Plans also and I notice that it isn't .5mH but .6mH....Will that make a difference for the Woofer lowpass crossover?

The .6 is for the low pass, the .5 is a shunt in the high pass. If your low pass coil is a .5, you need to swap it. Outside the +- 10% allowed tolerance. The region it works is pretty critical.

Ok. I was worried for a second I had ordered the wrong parts. As far as I can tell I am following the diagram exactly. Had my boss check over it while I was soldering them up. As I said before I have one board with the high-pass and one with the low pass per cabinet. I'll have pictures of those up soon. Letting the glue dry.

Hey all, I know this is a bit late, but my Dad and I were finally able to get started on the cabinets. Had to reorder wood since the other was not what was ordered. Today we go the basic cab built for the tops. Still have to mount the sheaths and bracing inside and should just be ready to wire it up and call it good. We did break from the plans on a few occasions. For instance instead of cutting out a huge 24 inch circle we used left over pieces which we modified a piece to be a jig. From there it was basically just when ever we had a big enough scrap it was turned into a sheath mount.

Aside from that everything else was exactly to the plans. I have a few pictures that I am working on getting posted. Tomorrow we are going to try to finish the top cabs and start on monitors. Bill the plans are awesome. I can't wait to hear them!
