Hi from McAllen Texas

#1 Post by Jojo »

Hi
My name is Jojo I'm from McAllen Texas its about 4hrs south of San Antonio Texas. I'm a part time DJ and full time phlebotomist. I came across this site while researching Homemade folded horns about 2yrs ago. I would read the post from other members but never registered till now. I bought the plans 2yrs ago for the DR250, tuba30 and titan48 but never got around to building them. Honestly I was very skeptical about the performance of the DR's compared to my JBL JRX125. I know the JRX are not top of the line but they sounded really nice and powerful. About 1 months ago I finished my last pair of 6 DR250 loaded with 3010 and compression drivers and they sure made a believer out of me.. after finishing and hearing a pair of DR's for the first time I made the decision to sell my heavy JRX in a heart beat. Took me about a month to build 6 just wish i hadn't waited 2yrs to build them :bash: .
Now im ready to start building the subs but not totally sure if the tuba30 or titan48 will work best for me. I currently have 6 of B52'S but want more of chest thumping sound. below is a link of the style of music is normally play in gigs where i live. I would also really appreciate if someone would know how many subs of either one my current amp is able to push. I would greatly appreciate any help in deciding on what subs would work best for me .
My current set up:
XTi 2000 ... highs
XTi 4000 ... mids
XLS 5000 .. lows
DriveRack PA2
Thank you

Hi, and welcome to the forum! Good to hear that you like/prefer the DR250!

Of your two choices, judging by the two song examples, the T48 for the win.

Hello Jojo,
I am in McAllen too. You will find that the fellas on this forum are top notch when it comes to advice and education. I have learned much by reading on this forum.
I would love to hear your DR250's.
I have been on the forum for about 6 years. I bought the CD but I have only built a pair of T30 24" wide for my bro-in-law. Time is my major hurdle. I love sound, family and work come 1 and 2.

I DJ a bit for friends and church functions. I will be doing a youth dance tonight with the T30's. You are welcome to come out and listen. PM me if interested,

Oscar

To give you a heads up, once you build horns (or any well performing sub) there won't be as much "thump". It cleans up the mix if everything is correctly set up. The bass will not be exaggerated as it is very typically done in most of the set ups which are used to play spanish music.

But T48 will be perfect for your needs. Higher sensitivity where you need it and still low enough for just about all the content you will play.
Built:6 t39, t18, 4 Jack10, 2 autotuba, 2 SLA,2 wedge, 2 TT, 2 Tritrix, curved sla, 2 otop212, 2 SLA pros, Ported 8" sub, 2 ported 210, dual ported 8" sub

Thank you Gentlemen for the welcome and fast reply. More than likely going with the T48 because of what was commented and what i have read in the forum I think they are best suited for what I want to achieve. Mr. Oscar your more thanks welcome to stop by any time during any weekend to hear the DR250. PM me to see when would be the best time .. One more question fellas , how many T48 will I be able to push comfortably with my XLS5000?

Two per channel without breaking a sweat. Three per channel with lots of room.

Four per channel if you aren't pushing it to the limit and playing non-stop. I'd have no problem running a live show like this, but if it's all DJ - then I'd stop at three per side.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

The XLS5000 puts out ~90v. So a bit overkill for the T48 and will need to be throttled back by the limiter for regular parallel wiring of subs. If you series wire dual loaded subs, each driver would see ~45 volts which is shy of the 60v (3015lf option) limit. So its either too much or not enough depending on how you wire.

IME the XLS5000 doesn't like 2 ohms. It'll work in a pinch but I usually put a big aux fan blowing on the front and I find the front intake clogs easy, so monthly/weekly blows with an airduster is usually necessary to keep the air flowing. Based on that I'd say 3 T48's a side would be all I'd be comfortable with, 4 a side and I'd be scared of it thermalling out. Keep in mind that the genre of music we use is mostly modern club dance hits and EDM, so sustained bass notes are the norm, a less demanding genre may be just fine at 2 ohms.

It is because of the XLS5000's affinity to thermal out (mostly because of the fine intake grill clogging with dust along with bass heavy music) that I leaned a trick to get it going quickly. Invert the airduster and flog the intakes with liquid propellant, a good 30 second spray will get you back and running quickly.

If you hit the road with the XLS5000, then that 20 amp plug can be a pain. I've been caught wondering how I'm going to plug that sucker in.
Built:
17" width 10" driver Autotuba
2 x 29" width dual Lab12 Tuba60
6 x DR250 2510/asd1001
In progress:
2 x DR250 2510/asd1001
For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience
