Selenium Horn loaded plans

#1 Post by J_Dunavin »

A while back Parts express had plans for Selenium speakers that look pretty cool. You can still find them here:

Here is an example i found:

Has anyone ever built or heard one of these?
I'm NOT planning to build one, I love my BFM gear too much and Bill's designs are proven! I'm just interested in what these really are. Are they "horn loaded" what's the adventge or disadvantge with these designs?
They look big and heavy!

It's a trapezoid cab, intended for side by side splayed placement, with a low frequency cutoff of 200Hz. Totally obsolete.

Hmm interesting.
What was the thought of placing them side by side?

Cabinets like these were clustered in a cylindrical array for increased horizontal dispersion. It seems that from the 1950s to the 1980s pro-audio engineers forgot about line arrays. (but I bet your school auditorium had a pair of 'column speakers' (which were spot on, but considered uncool for the big boys.)).

Engineers never forgot about them, it was the users who were unaware of the physics of how sound worked who insisted on splaying cabs. Manufacturers simply gave the users what they wanted.
