Simplexx 10 Wedges

#1 Post by wcriley »

Just ordered the parts for a 3 x S10 wedge build. I'm not good at remembering to take progress photos, so this might be a short thread.
I'll be using round metal grills, round-flanged SpeakOn jacks and a single strap handle on each box.
I'm getting the drivers, X-over components and straps from Leland/Speaker Hardware. The jacks, feet and grills are coming from MCM Electronics. (Leland doesn't carry the specific items I want.)
Finish is still to be decided: Duratex, tolex or flat black paint.

Parts from MCM arrived a few days ago. Part of the orderl order from Leland enroute. Plywood bought. Weather permitting, sawdust will start flying tomorrow.

It's probably too late, but if you're putting two speakons allowing you to loop out to another wedge, the smaller D series speakon use a lot less real estate and a smaller dish.

Not if you put one on each side, as shown in the Sketchup model.

I realize having speakons on each side keeps the cabling a little neater, but I find when doing quick changeovers it's easier with both speakons on one side. This allows the wedge to be picked up with one hand while grabbing both cables in the other hand when re-positioning the wedge.

To each their own. I love having one speakon on either side of my wedges. Easy and neat daisy chaining, less cable clutter on stage.

Cut 3 sets of sides, tops and bottoms yesterday. Hoping to get that much assembled this evening.

I don't have a table saw and my circular saw skills leave a lot to be desired. For this build, I got smart and clamped two sheets of ply together so the pieces for each box match up.

I won't be using jack plates with these: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/NL4MPR

I haven't decided whether to put one on each side or both on one side. Each has its pros and cons. I'll probably wait until I'm ready to drill before deciding.

You could go for best of both worlds: two on one side (handle side), one on the other.

Sharp idea to clamp two together and have identical cuts

Hmm...That might also shorten the cable run to the drummers wedge.

If I'd done that back when I built my Jacks, I wouldn't have one that wobbles when it's sitting on the floor. :wall:

You can make a table saw very easily by getting a sheet of ply or chipboard etc. Make a single plunge cut in the middle of the board with your circular saw and screw the saw to the board with a few wood screws (most circular saws have some holes in the base plate for this purpose) or use some scrap timber braces to secure it. Turn the whole thing over on a set of saw horses (trestles) and you have a perfectly good table saw :hyper:

The coils and caps arrived yesterday.

I didn't realize until I opened the box that the values in the Wedge plans are different than what's listed for the regular Simplexx 10...and that Speaker Hardware's coax driver kit includes the latter.

For reasons I won't get into, this project is moving very slowly.
Sides, tops and bottoms are glued. Yesterday I cut the baffles to size. Today I hope to do the driver cutouts.

In past projects I've not been able to borrow a router when it came time for the driver cutouts, so I did them with a hand held jig saw. Needless to say, they weren't pretty. I now own a trim router and circle jig, so I'll be giving that a try.
