First Outing With OTOP 12 JARRAY

#1 Post by cave »

Hi folks, hang in there for review of my first gig with the otop12 jarray.

My church held a convention for an average of seven thousand participants over the last three weeks in three different locations in Ghana. 14th to 31st August 2014. I won the bid to provide sound for the event so I decided to rent a friends system (tasso 960 series and CVR 218 subs). My friends father who happens to be a seasoned audio engineer, went along with his team to set up their stuff. I set up the Otops on the side to provide fills to compliment the tassos since they were set up high to provide coverage for an open field about 20x40meters wide in front of the main stage.

The tassos played quite well together with the cvr subs. My friends father was amazed at the Otops clarity in mid range and highs when I a/b the Otops against the tassos. He kept giving compliments to the design. We had to deploy delay stacks to fill the dead spots under the canopies at about 40 meters from the stage and another set of cvr full ranges 80 meters from the stage. I decided to split the Otops up into four stacks of two cabs. They were amazing at the job. I really love the output so much because they silenced my competitors.

I Eq'ed and crossovered the cabs in my speaker management system as shown in the jpegs below. I must say the boxes sound awsome. I have a project this week and will use the Otops only for tops. I will get you comments on that project soon.

Sweet work there, cave! Can you give a comparison to the array cabs in the pictures? How did a stack of 4 OTops sound against a stack of those other cabs? Power to SPL, overall impressions, any comments from others? Please share as much information as you can, or care to. Thanks and congratulations on a well-thought-out build.

It wont be fair to compare the Otop 12 Jarray to the specs of the power of the Tasso 960s above. those are really huge cabs but in clarity and throw the Otops really shine. I had to use them as delay stacks under very large canopies and they really did shine through.

A friend of mine who never believed in DIYs was stunned by the perfomance of the boxes he wants to use them for his next gig. He couldnt believe his eyes and what he heard coming from the such small cabs. He went full circle around the boxes serverally just to figure out how that perfomance was possible. :cowboy: :D
