Wedgehorn 8 Review

#1 Post by byacey »

Last Sunday I mixed four different bands on an flat bed trailer stage outside. Four WH8 on two mixes all EQ'd flat within the passband, crossed over at 100Hz and 10KHz.

I mixed monitors from the FOH mix position about 100 feet away from the stage, so it was difficult to initially judge how loud the wedges were. Immediately the musicians asked that I cut back on the overall monitor level as it was blowing them off the stage. After dialing it back to an acceptable level and a few minor adjustments to balance things to the musicians needs, everything went well. In fact, the bass player asked to get a little more bass guitar in the monitors, so I pulled it up in the mix knowing all he was going to get was primarily 2nd and 3rd octave harmonics, but it cut through well and was happy with what he heard.

I went up a little later to listen for myself while my assistant looked after the FOH, and the wedges sounded great. Between numbers, I asked the band if the monitors were to their liking, and the reply was "Perfect, don't change anything!"

I had lots of gain before feedback; in fact I didn't hear any feedback whatsoever the entire day, even when the monitors were initially too loud on the deck.

Nice review! I have had similar results, though I have yet to be brave enough to push any bass guitar thru mine.

Bass really isn't a problem, as long as your high pass xover point is set high enough and the limiters are set properly. Of course nobody will hear the fundamentals of the bass from the monitor, but that's not necessary either.
