Another DR250/T39 review

#1 Post by Curtybob »

The more I use these speakers, the better I get at making them sound great.

My band, Paragon, had a nice outside gig at a local car show this weekend. We were planning on bringing enough PA to knock a satellite out of orbit. But, due to slow shipping on some Crest Audio amps I bought, and the poor choice of selling a few amps in anticipation of said Crest amps, we were limited to using only 4 subs and 4 mains.

I thought we were screwed.

Saturday morning, I start setting up what we have, and find the stage is a bit shorter than anticipated. We decided to go with two 28" T39's and two 24" T39's (V plated stack of 4) to save a few inches above stage height. I wanted all 28 inchers to get as much as we could. But I agreed and figured we'd just suffer through it.

Shortly after setting up the PA, setting the delay to DR250's, and running the auto EQ, I starting playing some music off of my iPad to see how much volume we would be capable of achieving.

Wow! I never would have believed that half of our big gigging rig would have been enough to fill the area we were trying to cover. Luckily, it was a family event, so ear splitting levels were not what we were going for. But we were throwing nice, clean sound all the way to the building next door- through a nice crowd and a lot full of show cars. There was plenty of bass to go around. I got told by the staff (at the shop who hosted the car show) that there were several points during the day where we had all their big storefront windows shaking pretty hard, and they could hear us very clearly inside the office area. They were impressed, and plan to have us play and provide sound at several events in their chain of stores this year.

Thinking of a setup like this? No worries. Follow the advice given in the plans and here on the forum for proper usage. There is no better setup anywhere near this price range.

Awesome! The satellite view certainly gives an idea of how large of an area you covered.

Absolutely. The clarity at the edges of the space was amazing. Definitely not horribly loud, but every detail was there. Also seemed to have a bit of a boost as you got closer to the buildings surrounding us. It was really cool to hear everything from that far away.... but to feel everything up close was awesome.

Still havent gotten my Crest amps yet... playing a bike rally in Grassy, MO right now. Anyone close that wants to check out just how much damage you can do with only 4 T39's and 4 DR250's and slightly underpowered amps should come hang out. It's called the Root Hog Rally, and it's at Arrowhead Campground located on Castor River in Grassy MO. I have more subs I can hook up, but I dont trust these Behringer iNukes with a 2 ohm load. Honestly, what I have hooked up is pounding hard, and fills up the entire field... uh.. I mean "Parade Ground." Lol
