How to fit metal grills to a DR cab....

#1 Post by DAVID_L_PERRY »

I have been asked a few times about fitting grills to the DR cabs, so thought I would post this about grills for the DR cabs

Took some photos of my DR290's with the grills so you could see what they look like. I have since built 2 further DR280's with the exact same method.

You can see here how I extended the horn braces to provide support to the grills:-

The position of the grills are such that they are just a couple of mm's off the front of the HF horns. When making the throat side braces I cut them a little longer to allow for the front overhang plus a little more. Once they have been trimmed to suit the curve of the throat I could then mark them accurately for the correct rebate of the grills.

The photos show the HF horns clearly due to the flash, but you can't actually see them in normal light, which saves the piezo police having a look in

And this is what I sent to Penn to allow fabrication:-

One other thing I provide on my cabs is a 'transit panel' that protects the grills. I allow the top,btm & side panels to project 10mm further forward than the grills and this allows a blank MDF or ply panel to be fitted. Simple small squares of Velcro work very well to stop the grill from falling off when the cabs are vertical. You can see two DR cabs here, one with the panel, one without.

I have subs that have been working for years still with perfect grills thanks to this simple transit cover .

The next thing is to figure out how to use two Transit Covers as a V-Coupler.

Double duty function.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Exactly what I was planning with my T48's..... :D

The grills cost approx £20 each , cut pre bent and painted. Worth every penny
