My minimum width THTLP

#1 Post by tartan »

Just started my 15" wide THTLP today. I made the initial plywood rips, got the two sides cut, and did the layout drawing.

I should have enough wood to cut panel 9 the length of the cabinet, like others have done. I can't see any harm in this modification.

This beast will likely be painted the color of our walls (or maybe just black), and stood up on end in the corner. I have little kids, so safety straps will be used to keep it from toppling over and crushing one of them.

I've got an old AB studio power amp I'll bridge mono to drive this, hanging off a Brutefir-powered audio system. Should be fun!

Some pics...

Congratualtions on your start :)

That split:
Run a good smear of PL down it, let it set and sand it smooth. That should prevent any ply separation...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Yep -- that's the plan. I didn't see it when selecting sheets in the dark supply building at the only Arauco dealer in Denver. :( Nothing a little PL can't solve.

Having used both a T39 and T48s for live sound, I'm quite excited about this build.

Got a bit more done over the weekend, but lost my mind and put countersink holes on the interior of one of the sides. lol. More PL....

I really don't have space for a table saw, so after this project, I have a buyer lined up to take it off my hands. It's too bad -- it's a nice Craftsman contractor series with cast iron top, extensions, a nice fence, dust collection, etc. My wife is quite tired of the garage never being used for parking cars (other than parking my project Celica GT4 [along with all the associated tools] you see in the pics). I think our next house needs a workshop ... one side for cars, the other for wood. :) I need to move to a cheaper part of the country, so I can just build one. Hmm...

So anyway, the pictures... (And why the 700 pixel limit on embedded images?)

This is one of those 'it's so obvious, how did I miss it?' things, that inverted V block to help clamp the corner pieces... :wall:

Looking good. Feel free to post the GT4 also...

About the table saw, man law number one: there is always room for tool. Man law number two: there is always room for more tools. Get creative, hang it from the ceiling when not in use or something.

He who dies with the most tools wins.

I got the idea from my father-in-law, who just bought a 12" sliding mitre saw and didn't have room for it and the stand. So he hung them from the ceiling.

More progress over the last couple of days.

I got the baffle cut, made a custom router jig for the hole, and mounted up the driver. Gave it a good 12 hrs of 25Hz@9.6V, firing down into a mattress. My poor little AB 1U amp got quite hot in the process.

I mounted the baffle in the cabinet tonight, along with the 2/6 brace, and I went a bit clamp-happy.
