Let's get real here for a bit. If you're a young man you have three interests, which, listed in order of priority, are:
1. Getting laid.
2. Getting laid.
3. Getting laid.

Now in my case I had a fourth priority, playing music. I'm glad I did, because doing so paid my way through college, enabled me to always be able to make a living when other options didn't work out, and ultimately led me to where I am today. But when you get down to it the only reason I got interested in playing music in the first place was so that I could get laid.

Actuarial mortality tables are not about causes, only numbers. But most do indeed show a larger death rate between ages 15 and 25 (largely caused by males, terminal stupidity appears to be an appropriate name for this phenomenon).

I've been very fortunate to have two young men who have become my "students". One has a country band, one a rock band. They both want to learn how to make their bands sound better. Both are appreciative and respectful.

I've run sound for both of them, built racks for both of them, and have been helping them put together their systems. They often ask the same questions......but, they don't even know each other.

It's been a real joy sharing with them knowledge about something I love doing.

Another point must be made, that being that I'm white. All of the white musicians I've known also got into music for the same reason that I did. All of my black musician friends told me that they got into music because for them it was a way out of poverty, and they weren't good enough at sports to take that route.

And they wanted to get laid.

The only thing drummers have never laid is a consistent tempo....

Getting laid was always a happy diversion, but when I was a teenager, I was already working weekends mixing sound in a large old time dance hall. The place was called the Red Barn and comfortably held about 2000 people. The dance floor was 6400 square feet of free floating hardwood maple, and the sound system was 4 big EV dual 15 boxes with 4 2 inch horns flown in a cluster. Power was all SpectraSonic cards run bridged, the FOH mixers and stage side monitor mixer were all Kelsey. Pretty old school, but we did some big names in there; Charlie Pride, Mel Tillis, Johnny Cash & the Carter family to name a few. In fact, after sound check with Johnny Cash, we all had lunch together with Johnny and his family and road crew. When I was back in school the following Monday, nobody believed me!

After mixing for a few years, I thought it might be even more interesting to start playing music. I eventually got married when I was in my early 30's.

Uh huh, but we don't turn down just because a chart is put in front of us.

We can turn down when the dynamics of the song ask for it... hehehehehehehe

I've seen a few variants of this on FB lately:

Someone who puts $5000 worth of gear
Into a $500 car
To drive 100 miles
For a $50 gig

Grant, uhhh.....as I recall sound guys don't get laid.

Try running sound for a band at 15-25.

A friend of mine throughout middle school was a drummer and he (and all his other band mates) were getting plenty of tail.

Meanwhile I was in the background running video, editing, and keeping the guitarists / vocalists from blowing their gear up. Yeah, that got the chicks real hot.

On the brighter side, at least it kept my dick out of the petri dish. The late 90's were not a good time to be messing around.

Apparently I did this all wrong....

I'm the sound guy and married the drummers sister......who is also the rythem players daughter.

Of course that was 24 years ago next month.
