Single OTop12 with Deltalite 2512

#1 Post by chrisj360 »

Well, I started on my single OTop12. I wish I could afford to be doing a second at the same time but it just wasn't in the cards.

I will be honest, I feel like I cheated a little bit. I ordered the melded array and crossover pre-built from Leland at Speakerhardware.com. They look great and thanks again Leland. I was super nervous about doing them, so I decided to let a pro do it instead.

What's that? I need phase plugs. Good thing I have all these circles laying around from the tuba30 build.

Getting this 45 degree cut was the most difficult thing so far. Took me forever with just my hand held jigsaw.

Lookin' good so far! How long do you think it will be before you can get the other one started?

They do work better in pairs, ya know . . .

Since you have a driver on hand, if you can afford the ply right now, get it and build both cabs at the same time.

Then when you can afford the rest of the components, all you need to do is put them in and the second cab is in action...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

:loler: My phase plugs were cut from the same Tuba baffle cutout bits... great minds think alike eh? :)

First time I have seen one of Leland's xovers and melded array. They look nice Mr. Crooks. I have a long way to go before I am at that standard... I'd better get building soon so I can improve :chainsaw:

Thanks everyone. I might be able to just purchase the wood and then order the parts later, like you suggested Grant. The main problem right now is these builds are way too distracting than my studies at college. I figure if I can at least get this one top built then I can call it good enough for the moment. But we all know that is probably not going to happen either.

I think if I go the route of just building one and waiting for the components, all I really need to do is cut the driver spacer and test with my current driver on hand before attaching it. Everything else, I should be able to do regardless of components.

Cheers everyone.

Well here's the progress so far. I have almost all of the interior covered in foam. Back panel ready to go once I get the speakon connections all hooked up. Then it's mounting the crossover. I have to sand, route and do the first primer of flat black. Then mount the crossover, weather strip, duratex and secure the back panel for the win.

Then onto ordering the components for the second one of these guys, build and then onto two more tuba's. I am having a personal debate on whether to build two more tuba's at maybe 20 inches wide or 4 more at 16 inches. I could in theory get more subs out of the 60 x 60 sheet of baltic birch I can get in town than I could building them wider. However, I love the boom out of the 28 inch ones I just built. More boom versus portability….the debate rages on.

Anyway, enjoy the photos and as always thank you everyone for all of your experience, help and support.

Cheers.

Thanks. Who's this Mr Crooks.

A couple of thousand piezos later you'll get the hang of it.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Might want to think about removing some mattress topper in the center of the back so that the driver magnet and frame can vent.

Well, I finished it a few days ago but with school and work I haven't had a moment to post. I took your advice ncgrove and removed some of the foam by the driver magnet. Other than some cosmetic stuff, I believe they are finished with the exception of I think I wired the piezo's backwards. I have to switch the wires and find out. Even with that possibility, it was sounding great and even better with the tuba's running.

The second OTop should be finished in the near future. Then maybe another set of tuba's.

Thanks again everyone of the help and support.

A BIG thank you to Bill Fitzmaurice and Leland for helping make this sound system happen!

Cheers.
