4'x8' CNC Router
Re: 4'x8' CNC Router
4th axis is the way to go. however this SIGNIFICANTLY increases the cost of the machine.

Usually because this is very, very expensive to do on a DIY machine.draehn wrote:I know it's just another complication, but why not add a 4th axis to the machine (head tilt)? Keep the same tool bit in the head and let the computer handle the trig to offset the carriage.

Hey, we're all DIY here! We should be able to find a way
.
Message me your design and I'll start the process!

spot on.sine143 wrote:True, bits can be changed for angles, but that pretty much means 4 or so tool changes per sheet. (At about $40 or more a piece). This is a major time sink. Imo it would bw easier to rip the angles with a table saw on to the cnc panels while sheet 2 is bein processed. a 3 axis can also e configuredto "profile" positive angles
not worth it to do angles. Bits would get expensive quick, and tool changes on diy cnc's is all manual, you'd have to set height on each bit.
profiling takes time, and the finish resolution would depend on stepover and ballmill dia. It'd be quicker to go and buy a tablesaw, set it up and cut.
I get to play with Mazak's at work, now that's some quick cnc's.

I am building a cnc based on the greenbull and blackfoot design
Love your post though but I'm just fascinated about what the cnc could do for diyers
