Simplexx 212 3012HO WO NF Bass Cabinet

I’ve said it before and I’m sayin’ it again…..This is the ultimate bass cabinet. This time really.... No really.

My Simplexx 212 has absolutely amazing low end, super smooth, perfect punch and the perfect amount of dig in growl, plenty of highs for my style, (which may not be for some). In fact a surprising amount of high end definition, much more than I expected. I still cut highs. There’s plenty of SPL for me on stage and plenty of headroom. It handles the B string with ease, very strong sub like quality. So even though it’s not a horn and not as efficient, if my use doesn’t even approach max output, who cares. The voicing for bass guitar is spot on with no eq. Loaded with two 3012HO’s it is extremely light weight, (but no scale).

After 6 gigs my Simplexx 212 has so far not put out a bad sound. It sounds better than any of you would probably believe. The best thing I can tell you is build one, it’s simple, it won’t take long, and you’ll be very pleased with the sound and the overall coolness of the box.

And so you know, I have a Jack210 bass cab, 2 Jack12 bass cabs, 2 OTop15 bass cabs, still on hand that I have gigged with extensively and this Simplexx 212 is exactly what I’ve been looking for.

The Simplexx Series is going to be a great addition for bass players. Not sure I would consider one for a PA top personally, with so much better on hand, but for someone that wants to get their feet wet in speaker building, the finished product, due to its superior design elements, puts it at the top of the heap of all direct radiators.

The next Simplexx build for me, (aside from a few more of these) will be the floor monitor but with power. This will be something to compete with the Mackie SM450 I run into, and use all the time.

Additional notes, the bass setup I use starts with either a Music Man Stingray5 HH or a Fender Jazz 5, both USA models, into a Demeter bass preamp into a DBX stereo compressor/gate into a QSC PLX2402 bridged into the Simplexx 212. Main band is a power trio doing Stevie, Jimmi, Buddy, etc. My tone is usually neck pick up oriented.

This is me about to use my new saawwrrd on a sheet of 5x5. I didn't realize sunshine came out my back side until a friend showed me this photo. Weird.

Is your cab woofers only without crossover or lowpass filter, Jim? Just wondering if something like this would work for me. A few other projects in the works, limited time, so I might make one or two single 12 Simplex cabs.

I like what you did with the grills

Beautiful Cabinet... Grade A speaker P*rn right there! Very nice.

and couldn't resist this attempt at a humorous aside....

.... and then Sensei said.... "saawwrrd"

and many many things become clear where what was once unclear.

Nice cab, what is framing the grills and the strip between top and bottom?

What about the Simplexx makes you say that it's a better bass guitar cabinet compared to your Jacks?

For the trim around the grills, I used a type of automotive interior trim, obtained from an auto body supply store, it's cross section is basically u-shaped and it's pre-filled with adhesive in the channel so you just press it on. Works great, very easy. I'm sure there are different colors so you can achieve different looks.

The reason I say better than the Jack is just because of what I call voicing. The voicing of the Simplexx 212 is spot on perfect for bass guitar. I found the Jacks, or any horned box needs a bit of eq tweaking to sound right for bass and even then some fretted high on the neck notes just have a funny tone to me in comparison. It's highly personal so I encourage you to try it for yourself.

In contrast I just did an outdoor band party with 4-T48x30x3015 with 3 Jack12's per side (with DeltaPro12A's) and it sounded absolutely astonishing. I would have never reached for the Simplexx for that situation.

For what it's worth, I live in a small town that has an excellent music scene, there are many top bass players, some actual name brand dudes (which sucks) in town. I have had 4 guys demo the cab and they all loved it. I'm just waiting for someone else on here to build one and chime in. It's very easy and fast to build in comparison to the Jack.

Jim,

Thanks for this great info! I was considering a Jack, but after your info, I'm leaning more towards a Simplexx 112 or pair of them. A few more questions...

1. How much does your cab weigh?
2. How is the upper mid and high end compared to your Jacks (assuming your Jacks have no HF section)?
3. Is there much fundamental with the low B, or is it mostly overtones?
4. Do you happen to have an in-process pic from your build that would show the inside of the finished cab before the drivers are mounted?
