+1 - I was initially disappointed with the 'loud'ness of my system, until I realized how loud (and CLEAN) it really was (odd thing to say, but you'll soon understand). Next to your sub, his may well sound louder, but yours won't be sounding all fat and flabby like his will.
If your mate has an open mind, he'll appreciate the nice clean qualities of your sub, if he hasn't he'll just write it off and stick to his belief that bass is supposed to sound all flabby. OTOH, YOU also have to have an open mind - take along tea making facilities and ask where the hot water comes out of his 2kW kettle

Hell, in a simple comparison, my creative computer speaker 6.5" sub sounded louder than even my t39's. That's why for a long time the kick would just feel SUPER mushy and it "dragged" so much it was bothersome. I was actually drowning everything with low end although it just sounded bad as what I needed was a HUGE boost not in the sub but in the 80-200hz range.

The way you show off these subs is not by hooking them up and and hearing how loud they go. Pure sub frequencies are truly quite unimpressive. The way it's done is by fine tuning the whole system and letting them hear how clean and effortless and low everything becomes. If done correctly, and you're not used to this sound, you will hear and feel the bass, but it will be so natural, you will swear the subs are doing nothing, until you turn them off and on.

Point noted: I will probably be asking to help with set up prior to having him come over for a listen. Just to make sure my setup is well tuned and I am not doing something wrong.

Try to plan your "demo" outdoors, or in a decent size empty space. Don't do it in a house, garage, shed, etc. A large shop, pole barn, an empty venue, someplace with some space. Initially, his system will sound "louder" from all the harmonics. as you move away, and to the sides, this is where your system will shine. P.S. Don't forget to bring a quality SPL meter, an RTA, if you have access to one, and a digital volt meter. A video camera would be real great, too.

I read about Bill with a 'mobile RTA' at Hifibob's place. Just thinking the OP may want an idea of what to do with the above, specifically the RTA. Firstly, what is the typical hardware or gizmo for a 'mobile RTA', and what do you do with it, when A/B'ing a couple of systems? I think I appreciate that the RTA, and polar response is largely the science behind measuring how good systems are, but appreciating the measurement science is another thing.
